Oh btw, I hope many people here contribute with their lists. It`s a great way for novices like myself to get a larger overview. Ever tried googling "Books about Little Bighorn"? My bet is you`d break the internet :S

Noggy, add to the list "Custer's Trials". This book gives a very good description of Custer's character and mindset. The author won a Pulitzer for this book, if memory serves correctly. The new Donahue book is proving to be very interesting.

I was wondering what to start reading next, so I`ll take that as a sign.

You could follow that one up with Donahue's new book, "Where the Rivers Ran Red". His analysis of Custer's thinking agrees with that shown in "Custer's Trials". Donahue has worked at the battle field for a good number of years and his take on the fight is interesting.

Hi Chaps Thanks for getting involved with this thread. My 10 (in no particular order of merit or preference are (a) for the indian accounts etc 1. The Custer Myth 2,3 any two of Hardorffs' Indian collection of narratives by the Lakota and Cheyenne. (b) For books on Custer 4. Glory Hunter 5. The Custer Reader by Hutton and 6. My Life on the Plains by the man himself. For the battle itself I would recommend 2 books that should be read concurrently 7. Custers Last Campaign by Gray and 8. Lakota Noon by Michno. At 9. Archaeology, History and Custer's Last Battle: Little Bighorn Reexamined by Fox, Richard A. In at 10. The Transcript of the Reno Court of Inquiry by Hunt which relies heavily on Nichols. Unlike Grahams account it is a transcript an not an abstract.
