Was Custer expecting Crook to meet him at the big horn. Custer already knew of Indian buildup, no surprise a d Crook set Custer up, saying he would meet him there, knowing Custer would attack anyway?

There is a book about this situation I’m quite keen to get -
Why Custer Was Never Warned. by Philip Thomas Tucker
Not set up per se, more in the way of not being told.

Was Custer expecting Crook to meet him at the big horn. Custer already knew of Indian buildup, no surprise a d Crook set Custer up, saying he would meet him there, knowing Custer would attack anyway? Custer was serving under Terry, who never made any plans with Crook. No messengers were sent from Crook to Custer about him approaching. The short answer is "no".

A REPORT OF THE CHIEF OF ENGINEERS from page 565 at APPENDIX MM gives the ANNUAL REPORT OF MAJOR G.L. GILLESPIE, CORPS OF ENGINEERS, FOR THE FISCAL YEAR ENDING JUNE 30,1876; as - Explorations and Surveys, military division of the Missouri. Dated July 11, 1876 General: I have the honor to submit my annual report of operations as engineer officer at headquarters Military Division of the Missouri, for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1876. .... link to the report. Maguire reported to Gillespie. The strategy and practice of the campaigns is outlined, including the erroneous belief that Crook had destroyed Crazy Horse's camp on the Powder River in the attack made by J.J. Reynolds. In reality, this attack had greatly aided Sitting Bull to enlist the support of the Cheyennes that following summer. Gillespie included some information on the scout undertaken by Maj. Reno with six companies of the 7th Cavalry. Immediately after reaching the Powder River, June 7, General Terry sent Major Reno of the Seventh Cavalry, with six companies, to scout up the Powder River to the Little Powder, thence down Mizpah Creek, thence over the divide to Pumpkin Creek, and thence to rejoin the com- mand at the mouth of the Tongue River. After reaching the Little Powder River, Major Reno departed somewhat from his instructions, and moved directly across the country to the Rosebud, which he reached 25 miles from its mouth. Here he discovered an Indian trail leading up the creek. After following this for 20 miles, Major Reno returned on his trail and rejoined his command at the mouth of the Tongue River on June 19. June 21, (just four days after Crook's fight at the Rosebud Cafion,) General Terry and Colonel Gibbou united their commands at the mouth of the Rosebud. So, Reno scouted to 45 miles down (up) the Rosebud. Which is the vicinity of Jimtown, not far from Lame Deer. Which is 15 miles from Busby. Which is 25 miles from Garryowen.

You can't vote no above, so you have rigged this foolish poll. Had GAC followed his orders, as given, he would have known about the Rosebud. So should have the poll been did CAC avoid a link up with Crook to garner all the glory or some other claptrap.
Regards, Tom

I think the dance pole at the Holiday was the best pole ever. That may be, but my money is on both the North and the South Pole being better.

In November 1875, Grant and Cabinet held a secret meeting about the Indian situation. In December 1875, the Indians were given an ultimatum. Return to the Reservation or suffer. In February 1876, Sheridan issues his three prong attack plan. Crook, Gibbons and Terry. June ...there are two seasons those of us who have lived out there recognize. Summer and Winter. Sometimes Winter doesn't go away until mid to late June. It would not have been much of a military campaign during the middle of an unexpected blizzard. There is nothing in the world more entertaining than seeing California tourists in shorts and Tee Shirts riding out a blizzard in late May at Evanston or Cheyenne at Little America. Terry separates Custer, allowing him and the Seventh to roam freely.
The most respected Indian Fighter, certainly the most recognized, is Crook, not Custer. At Rosebud, the Crazy Horse tactics took all the confidence and fight out of Crook's 1,000 man Force. Crook leaves the field sending no couriers to advise Terry of Gibbons. Crook has no idea where Custer is, he knows nothing about Terry's Custer instructions.
The Rosebud Indians are the Little Big Horn Indians. Those warriors have all the confidence in the world nine days later ... and Custer rode right into them.
