i have it in my mind the scene in the film - 'Custer Of The West' - when he was at the theatre watching a musical about himself

Hmm indeed. Had a look for it on the net, turns out the script is online to read, but also is played on youtube, only the vocals and music, no stage show and actors, not sure that gives it the effect it wants to create to any audiences. Definitely unusual, but if you want something different, like the one-man play too, I guess they cover it
