I have been researching my 2nd great grandfather through his 5 years as a private with Company D of the 4th Regiment of the Infantry. My question is this.
When looking at a muster roll, it shows a person sent on duty to another place such as in my case "Black Hills Territory" then returning 3 months later. How can I find out what he did or who he was attached to while there?
Thanks for your help
Dan

From there you may be able to figure out who or what units were in the Black Hills at the same time. Would this be the 1874 expedition? If it is, you will need to figure out which 10 companies were with Custer and which two infantry companies were there. If so, you will need the muster rolls for those units to see where he was carried. The muster rolls should tell you where he was assigned and what he did. You can post it here and I will see if I have any information on him. Best wishes, Fred.

The muster roll I have (some are missing) is Aug 10 of 1874. The description says Black Hills WY. and Detached Service. Name is Private Monroe Cole. That clarifies it somewhat. The Custer-7th Cavalry expedition to the Black Hills took place from July 2 – August 30, 1874. That puts Cole right in the middle of it. These are the units of the expedition: • Six companies of the 7th Cavalry stationed at FAL • Four companies of the 7th stationed at Fort Rice • Company I, 20th Infantry • Company G, 17th Infantry • 61 Indian scouts from Fort Abraham Lincoln and Fort Rice If your ancestor was in the 4th Infantry, then he was assigned, TDY, to one of the above, though for whatever reason I do not know. My advice to you is to dig up the muster rolls for the Infantry units first and if you do not see him with one of those, then try the 7th Cavalry. I hope this helps. Keep me posted, here, and let me know what you find. Best wishes, Fred.
