Fred, Are you attempting to fire up the masses? No, not at all. I just think a straight-forward, honest, civil discussion of the LBHA is necessary. Otherwise, how does one get new ideas to rejuvenate a fine organization? It would be great to see people like Chuck and Diane Merkel active once again in the LBHA. There is no need for slander, liable, name-calling or such; but a decent and civil discussion is more than necessary. Ideas come from such discussion. It is clear to me the LBHA could use some new ideas and an infusion of good people. I would like to see that. Diane's board has always been the leader, always at the forefront. Why not in a discussion of this subject? Best wishes, Fred.

Fred, I agree that the conversation needs to take place. The LBHA Board has to long been just a small group pushing their agenda on the membership.
I applaud Diane for keeping this Board active.
As a member of the LBHA I hope things change or I will not return. Seems the whole Board needs to get involved and look at all aspects of the organization.

Fred,
As I have stated, I let my membership lapse. I found the condescension, changing of posts, and misleading statements by the moderator on the LBHA board to be not in keeping with the majority of people that I met at the two conferences I attended. That board is their public face. And, what I have heard about their Facebook page actions just this week seems to be in line with their board.
Having said that, I was hoping to get to the conference in Kansas on Saturday to join Steve for dinner and maybe have a few words with Lowell. I can't get there any earlier, as my youngest son is getting married. I had considered re-upping after talking to Lowell. But, after hearing he has not called you back, who knows? I know my dues will make little difference.
Both Beth and Dave really care about the subject of the Little Big Horn and history in general, it is a shame that they have been treated so shabbily by that forum as well. Hey, maybe this is just a closed club for closed minds.
Regards, Tom

Yankee... thank you.
Look... the fact Lowell has not called me back is meaningless. He and I are in contact simply by virtue of the fact I am on the editorial review board of the Research Review and Lowell is its editor; so there is no friction, al all, between us. I am sure he is up to his neck in this whole thing and as a long-time member, he is even more concerned than we are.
In my opinion, the biggest mistake you guys are making-- or many of you, anyway-- is in condemning the LBHA because of the message boards. Those message boards are nothing more than an adjunct afterthought of the organization as a whole and I am absolutely sure no one has ever taken them as a serious entreé into the organization. Maybe that will change as well and maybe it is something needing to be addressed by the more savvy technologically inclined members.
By not joining or letting membership lapse helps no one and certainly sends no message to anyone on the LBHA board or anyone involved with the organization. All it is is negative reinforcement where none is needed, asked for, noticed, or cared about. What is needed is positive reinforcement: interest, caring, participation, membership... and a reasonable opinion on how to make the organization better... and that includes the Facebook site and the message boards. They can be the entryway into an organization needing and wanting to re-build.
Lowell Smith is an ace; so is Chuck Merkel; give the one some time; and hope the other returns.
Best wishes, Fred.

Fred For the vast majority of us LBHA members, the message board and the little newsletter is our only contact with the organization. I can only speak for myself but I don't have the time or inclination to do more than participate in discussions and pay my dues. I have not cancelled my membership despite my differences with the moderator. Our relationship has nothing to do with my support of the organization and hopefully scholarship. Your articles are the high light of the Annual Journal and well worth my membership dues.
I do not know Mr. Smith or Mr. Merkle and have only corresponded with Diane so I will take your word they are aces and hope for the LBHA to recover and become stronger from this current situation. I will renew my membership on your recommendation and await developments. Regards Dave

Dave,
I understand fully. While the "official" message board seems to lie fallow, why don't you just consider this board as your link? The point Beth brought up about the LBHA linking its site to other message boards is extremely valid and I will try to discuss it with those on the board I know.
Best wishes, Fred.

Fred I seem to be able to aggravate the musketeer so I keep posting on this board and occasionally look at that board. I recently found my name being mentioned in a less than favorably manner so I considered that a success. Bullies just can't deal with people who just don't go away. He He Regards Dave

Fred, congrats on your son's marriage. My family victories are a bit more modest as I will be attending my granddaughter's Pre-K graduation. Don't want you people thinking that I am one of the young folks.
I wish everyone who chooses LBHA membership well in cleaning up the disaster. I want no part of it.
Best, David

David,
That would seem logical, but the owner of the board is responsible for the content, at least in the eyes of proboards, and a logical extension of that is proboards is responsible for the content their boards!
