That's right the devil is in the details. From a commander who seemed to pay little attention to detail. The LTC, in charge willfully and with reckless regard did:
* use pack mules that weren't trained and that were handled by troops that had never handled mules before.
* make poor use of scouting and recon abilities.
* did not send Herendeen to update Terry/Gibbon.
* wore out man and beast, prior to a major engagement.
* failed to share any plan with subordinates.
* divided his force in the face of the enemy not knowing exact size or exact location.
* continue to reduce firepower by division/subtraction.
* sent a poorly worded a note to Benteen, that lacked specificity.
* made a poor choice of a message carrier.
* continued to distance of himself from requested support.
There are more.
Regards, Tom

AMEN! You have that right. Now get ready for the lashback.
Another one: Not understanding (or following) 'commander's intent' from Terry. Think...Terry wanted GAC to not follow the Indian trail to the LBH but go further upstream before cutting over to the LBH--because--if the Indians were going to run, as everyone thought they would, Terry wanted to make sure they were BETWEEN the two columns. Think of what would have happened if the Indian Village was just a mile or two upstream from where Reno creek and the 7th came out on the LBH and the Indians did run...and thus get away. Terry would be after the boy general 'with a sharp stick'. He might have even been court martialed for disobeying orders. That leeway while "nearly in contact with the enemy" didn't mean a day's march from the enemy.

I agree. You can't create the emergency that causes you to deviate from an order leading to a failure such as Custer had and then expect Terry to say good job.

It would beat the heck out of meeting Spanky/Rini.

Tom, I was there, both Rapid city and LBH the following week. This is being written a couple years later and I wonder if we did in fact meet. I hope so.
