Reno did have prior experience "fighting" NAs and I do believe in was further west, but can't remember off-hand.

I think the bottom line is that Reno was not the bumbling amateur that many who look to absolve Custer try to pin on him. Neither was Terry albeit his battle experience was strictly during the Civil War prior to LBH I believe. 2nd Battle of Fort Fisher was his high water mark. Just trying to keep this real.
Best,
David

Nichole, I guess you could call it a biography of Major Marcus Reno. It pretty much says what Tom said. Reno was involved in rescuing 2 people from a wagon train slaughter, but other than that no real battles with Indians. He mostly served on Court Martial proceedings and in charge of supplies. Be Well Dan

David Reno's actions have been so distorted over the years to fit favorite theories absolving Custer of responsibility for the defeat at the Little Big Horn. It started with Whittaker and Libbie and has continued to this day. Reno has enough to account for with actions let alone adding GAC's to his ledger account. Regards Dave
Like DC use to ask: "Exactly. I still find it truly annoying that those who damn Reno's retreat/charge/rout have yet to offer a plausible description of how it could have been done better, by which is meant saving more men and mounts. I don't get the logic of damning people for abandoning the wounded but praising procedures that would increase the number and insuring increased disaster. It's most annoying when supposed military experts trot down that path."

<but other than that no real battles with Indians . . .>
I know we've discussed this in the past but how many officers that were at the LBH had experience fighting Indians? How about Sergeants?
