If I might make a suggestion for further research into Custer's actions and his motives read Last in Their Class: Custer, Pickett and the Goats of West Point by James Robbins. I purchased the
e-book version on Amazon. This book is a gold mine of information about West Point and the men who matriculated there.
Custer is covered from his cadet days to June 25, 1876. Excellent information with all sources cited and in the bibliography. Covers Custer's motives from shooting the deserters to appearing in Washington DC in 1876 prior to the LBH. I highly recommend this book. Regards Dave

On the first page of the Little Bighorn chapter in Robbins' book it notes that Custer refused the addition of four companies of Montana Volunteer Cavalry. Is this same group as the four companies of the 2nd Cavalry? If not who are they?
Looking for answers.
Regards
Dave

Is this same group as the four companies of the 2nd Cavalry? If not who are they? If Robbins actually wrote " Montana volunteer cavalry," he has/had no clue. The four cavalry companies offered by Brisbin-- no one but Brisbin-- were 2LT Charles Francis Roe’s Company F (1 officer, 49 EM); CPT James Nicholas Wheelan’s Company G (2 officers, 44 EM); CPT Edward Ball’s Company H (2 officers, 46 EM remaining, two having been killed earlier in the campaign); and CPT Lewis Thompson’s Company L (2 officers, 40 EM), all from the 2nd U. S. Cavalry Regiment and comprising the entire cavalry complement of Gibbon’s Montana column, hardly Montana volunteer cavalry. Best wishes, Fred.

Regards Dave Dave, I couldnt find anything in my books, so of course I cheated and searched the net a few different ways. I came up with the following, In 1867 the Gov of Montana formed the "Montana Territory Volunteer Militia" to cope with the growing Indian problem, however the arrival of US Army regulars including the 2nd Cavalry and 7th, 18th, and 27 Infantry relieved the need for territorial militia and they were disbanded in Jan 1868. Dave I would doubt that a Gov would go through the time and expense of forming a militia when he already had the regular US Army there to protect them. Certainly not proof, but the best I could come up with. Be Well Dan PS... I just saw Capt Freds post so forget my as Dark Cloud (RIP) would say gibberish. ( I loved that term)
