Yessir, very good points.I was referring to CH and Keogh areas and environs. More time for them to fight and break if Custer went to D and farted around at all and then back to the Flats before the final hill was humped.

What if they were all heading back from the north and C&L were in the lead, followed by I. How about the whole command did an about face up north when faced by Cheyenne numbers. How did Kellogg get where he was? How did the markers get placed across US HWY 212 near the trading post, before they were stolen? AZ, were there not casings on BRE that matched those found on CH?

You're correct Tom. Cases from 4 carbines on BRE were also identified on Calhoun Hill. That still leaves several scenarios that would fit some more likely than others. One I reject is that Indians captured carbines at the Calhoun area and then rode past LSH to fire from the BRE location which is across from the visitor center parking area. More likely troopers fired at both sites in my opinion. There is 10 different carbines identified at BRE if I recall correctly and only 4 have matches at Calhoun.
So for me it more likely that troopers fired from Calhoun before moving to BRE or that troopers advanced to BRE and fired while moving back to LSH and CH.
I think we should know that if the horses are in condition at the time then these distances are minutes in time.
The BRE site was also occupied by Indians and if you go there it would be obvious why. It is where you can have a view of the end of the BRE branch toward the river , Cemetery Ridge, and in the distance LSH. BRE could be used for cover by Indians to reach LSH, Battle Ridge, and the Calhoun area.
I think a study of BRE both where it leaves the current Indian monument and where it forks toward the LBH river would help and understanding it use for travel, cover, and concealment.
