Hi what was the difference between the horses from 1876 and todays horses.What breeds of horse did the Cavalry use.Thanks for any info. Brian

I believe that there wasn't a set breed of horse--buyers would look for more of a type of horse.

It was the conformation they wanted. Thoroughbreds of today will still fit the McClellan saddle. The Morgan had a particular line that had the needed conformation. The cavalry manuals include those characteristics that would be acceptable for cavalry use.

Hi thanks for responding.I Wonder what type of horse Commanche was, Thoroughbred cross with Morgan, Spanish Mustang.I do not believe that Quarter horses were around at the time.I guess the horses backs were narrower then for the Mcclellan saddle to fit than the horses of today beside the Thoroughbred . This subject deserves more research.Brian
