I recall a discussion some time ago about how American actors portray the no nonsense tough guy image, the British take a different view, they portray a normal man who shows courage in adversity. When I was growing up I remembers the main American actors being John Wayne, James Stewart, Henry Fonda, Randolph Scott, Gary Cooper and the hard knock trio of Cagney, Robinson and Bogart. Over here we had David Niven John Mills, Richard Attenborough, James Mason, Trevor Howard and the holy trinity of Gielgud, Richardson and Olivier. Ian. Guinness ? Tunes of Glory.

That's one you don't see very often Carl, and always worth watching, no matter how many times you have seen it previously. Did anyone ever see Guinness in a bad movie?

"Guinness" I Forgot about him, he could adapt to a lot of roles as anyone who has seen the "Lady Killers" would agree.

There is a story knocking about were Widmark and Palance were in a film together (panic in the streets I think it was called) and Palance was supposed to knock Widmark out with this rubber gun, but Palance thought that the gun look too false so he substituted it for a proper metal one and hits poor Richard over the head with it, I am sure he felt it too.

Don't forget Lavender Hill Mob as a showcase for the off beat roles Sir Alex could pull off.

Ian, you named a bunch of really great actors from both sides of the pond. I enjoy the movies of all of them. Each one great in his own right. Beth, TDWTBO was on AMC last week. My wife recorded it for me, most likely to torture me since I loved the movie when I was a kid, but as an adult with a little knowledge of what really went on at LBH, I really can't take the blatant fanboy theme and total disregard for historical facts that movie exhibits. Flynn was good in the pirate movies and Robin Hood, but his role as Custer really leaves me gagging. The other movies were fiction. His role as Custer, being based on history, just reeks of the "legend" crap. Libby Custer would have been very pleased with the way this movie presented her Georgie boy. Flynn had much better luck with his leading ladies than did Custer. According to a long dead aunt, he not only new how to throw a party but before he let the booze really get to him he was every bit the athlete Burt Lancaster was. Is it just a rumor or did he actually do some spying during the early part of WWII?
Regards, Tom

Tom, David Niven (Flynn’s buddie) served in the Phantom Signal unit, but Flynn himself was turned down on medical grounds because of a heart problem, apparently due to catching malaria and TB in his youth, you guys may know it as the 4F.

If anyone sees it coming up again on AMC let me know. My daughter is the family Flynn fan--truthfully an black and white movie fan. Can you imagine how many 18 year old actually know who Jeanette MacDonald and Eddy Nelson are let alone watch their movies. Beth
