Beth it is a reference to Madam Fluffy Custer. Mrs. General, Mrs. Lieutenant Colonel, Possessor of the sacred table. Mrs. I'll outlive them all so they dare not say a bad word about my Autie, bury me at the feet of Saint Custer. That one. She was younger than Custer and lived until 1933. For her to have pre-Victorian sensibilities she would have had to live in the time of Waterloo, and been about what 120 when she died.
I would just as soon McMurtry's book on Custer not be mentioned at the noon hour when I am more prone to curse and swear. I did love the Lonesome Dove novels though, Comanche Moon being my favorite.
If you happen to enjoy historical fiction on the TR and Republic Days in Tejas, try Wellman's Comancheros, Iron Mistress, and Magnificent Destiny

I think the biggest problem this forum has is bullying. We treat posters with contempt.
If someone has an opinion I disagree with, I will say so. That has nothing to do with my opinion of that poster as a person. If your arguments are 98% based on abuse, your arguments have no substance.
I learned as an instructor to treat everyone with dignity and respect. Since we evaluate character as well as skills and abilities, that does not mean we do not deal with people who are human being failures, vice a skill.
But this board has a well deserved reputation for abusing posters, which have cost us a dozen or so posters.
Chuck, to be clear, as Darkcloud and I have been saying for two years, this is directed at you.
I have no issues with you as a person, I greatly respect your efforts at redesigning the Army. The Light division concept has been crucial in our combat success the last 30 years.
But separate your objection to posts from posters.
Lol, but if you want to flay me, be my guest. I had a future Chief of Staff of the Army call me a traitor to the Army and the nation (Guy named Shinseki, if you have heard of him). I can take it. But I am not looking for an argument, just a discussion.
Respectfully,
William

Thanks for the book suggestions. I'll look into them Beth

Opposing "soldiers" have for centuries used the mutilation of genitalia as a way of humiliating their opponents. Whether it's Custer, Fetterman, Kidder or Chivington's "men" cutting off woman's body parts and displaying them in Denver the disfigurement of opponents is nothing new. It happened with GIs in Vietnam, on Iwo Jima, Iraq, Afghanistan or the current ISIS beheadings of US citizens. It doesn't matter whether you are "civilized" or a "savage" . . . mutilation of fallen enemies is a long-standing practice whether it was centuries ago or now!

<But this board has a well deserved reputation for abusing posters, which have cost us a dozen or so posters.> Really? You should have been around a few years ago when our "Swiss" member attacked anyone and everyone who didn't agree that Custer was the Golden Boy of All Time. I think he eventually ended up on a roof with a rifle!

<Seriously how did people survive in Austin before air conditioning? I've lived in the midwest and Florida which are known for hot humid summers but I about melt in this Austin heat. It might be from years living in Idaho with that dry desert heat.
This kind of hot weather makes me realize what a burden it would have been to fight in those uniforms and when add to the lack of water, a good diet and plain exhaustion, it must have been hell. It is also amazing that anyone had any sort of clear thought processes that day.>
And this was before Climate Change (aka Global Warming) Just think what it would be like now marching around even with the latest in technology, laying around in the heat, thunderstorms, floods, humidity . . . whoops . . . forgot about our boys in Irag & Afhganistan trying to survive in some of the most inhospitable environments on earth . . . but then so did the British & Russians, not to mention our current US soldiers trying to deal with the terrain, climate and nasty terrorists trying to cut off all your body parts in the name of Allah!

Agree with Montrose, and have said so here and upfront to QC. It's not just the juvenile bullying which - at arrival at the line marked "Here You be Counterproductive and Disgusting" QC sails over at flank speed - it's that it inspires the puppies to pile on. Here, Tubman. Always, yantaylor. It makes an officer into a street punk. It really does recall my jail time.
That said, not a few of those who get hammered well deserve it, and perhaps absent the condescending supposition of their own wonderfulness in knowledge or just in general, they wouldn't attract the responses they get. If you introduce yourself as an officer and/or soldier/Marine and combat vet, it's reasonable you act like one as Montrose does and AZ does. WO was wrong about a great deal in short amount of time and breezily seemed to assume it would be allowed because he's an officer. Never admitted error (something about being European disallows it, especially if from the sceptered isle or nearby). Doesn't fly here, and I do not think that in itself wrong or rude, but necessary and rather a duty. The board should be a source, not an entertainment for those who found Your Mama jokes too deep.
My own posts drip with admissions of error and/or complete ignorance. Doesn't matter, of course, because I'm so good looking, but others less fortunate ought to emulate that along with my singing style, which is seeing a Revival.

DC, puppy if you will/wish, but was not piling on, nor do I need a lead to be a smart ass when I see rotten fish. I say so. Private school, degree, military, 2 stints with Fortune 100 companies, I am still a bit of a gutter snipe, and a damn sure a redneck smart ass. Puppy, no, junk yard dog, maybe. I do appreciate you being the voice of reason. Have a wonderful LD weekend, to all!
Regards, Tom

Will and DC I take your comments very seriously. DC I was a street punk long before I became anything including an officer. I only attack when I am first attacked, adversely confronted, or either is done to friends of mine.
I will also say that there are times when any logical counterargument makes no difference to those it is directed to. This is one of those occasions. It should be obvious to both of you that this man came here for no good or legitimate purpose, by simply reading the sum total of his posts. I do have a great weakness though, in that I wear my distain for some brightly colored on my sleeve. That is my cross to bear, and yours to correctly point out.
In short, I have offended both of you with my actions. Had no intention of doing so or involving you in it.
DC: If your beef is with me, leave Ian, Tom, and WO out of it. Failure to do so on your part, makes you no better, in fact worse, than you say I am. You know where I am. I am not hard to find, and throwing grenades in other directions when your target is me is the act of a sniveling coward. That's not bullying. That's just truth.

Beth: She is not one of my favorite people, for several reasons, most of which is the destruction of two people, for the sole purpose of elevating her husband, so that she might continue to wear his rank on her petticoat.

What have I missed here?
What prompted this latest flame-war? I haven't read all the posts leading up to it, paying most attention to "Mulligan" because he is the new guy, and the first thing I see this morning is he is going to "nail" Fred so high....
...?
What have I missed?
Best wishes, Fred.

What have I missed? Best wishes, Fred. It would appear you might have had a classic troll swoop in, spout outragious opinions and then sits back to watch a board get all in a ruckous. I may be new to this group, but I have been around messsage boards for at least 18 years, including as a moderator and as an owner so I am very familiar with the technique. For some reason they tend to show up more often on long holiday weekends. If Mulligan isn't a troll, he could be an interesting poster if he learns to self moderate. Beth

Well if Will or DC wants to know why I got my razor out, "nailing Fred" was the comment that did it. Before that my comments to him were reserved and on point. More than likely he came here for that expressed purpose, but that is speculation, not locked in concrete fact.
I have nothing but respect for Will. I respect DC as well, although he frustrates and confounds me most of the time. I also think with DC it is a bit of the pot calling the kettle black in that he has verbally abused Ian since his first day here, and continues to do so at any given opportunity. So DC when you stop that, for good, you will hear no more about it from me.
So Fred, you missed nothing of import, except me being taken to the woodshed by Will with sufficiency of reason, and DC being in one of his more superior in his own mind moods

No, QC, I'm not negotiating, you have no standing to suggest such, and I've pretty much lost all regard for you, anyway. You really are just like the guys I was in jail with, constantly trying new manipulations that don't work and throwing tantrums.
I can defend everything I've said to yantaylor or anyone, primarily because it's all true. What you have accused me of in the recent past is far more applicable to yourself. I don't post much, and when I do I make the effort to contribute substance and not use the forum as a social life. Try it.
