Well done Fred! I am currently reading Participants. I am a big enough nerd to actually enjoy reading reference works, sad eh! It is a fantastic work! As a sometime genealogist I am staggered by the amount of data you have collected from a large set of unrelated individuals. Looking forward to the new book. Cheers

Fred,
Great interview! I'm looking forward to your new multi-volume book. As to the other book you planned, I don't know yet … <g>
All the best! Henk

Thank you all, but especially, thank you, Diane.
For anyone who may not be aware of this, if it wasn't for Diane, neither of those two books would have ever been published. She will always be in my list of people I thank for helping.
Oh, and by the way, this gal, Julia Robb, is a very fine writer, out of Texas. She has written several novels and writes this blog. Her Website itself is very elegant and I am absolutely flattered she chose me to interview. She is very prominent among Western writers.
Very best wishes, Fred.

Wrong photo of Benteen's grave. That's his son's stone.

Wrong photo of Benteen's grave. That's his son's stone. I couldn't even make out the name, it was so dark on my computer. Great pick-up, however, and I will tell her. Best wishes, Fred.

DC,
The caption says it is the son's grave.
Best wishes, Fred.

It does. My error. Just caught the date, followed by "assumptions" that since Benteen but not his son was a subject, graphics would attach to the subjects. Also, too much coffee. Or not enough.
Still, why the son? If in Arlington, the father must be nearby. For that matter, why either?
It also seems that since you once warned me I'd be unhappy with your conclusions about Benteen that you've come around to different view a bit. AZ having destroyed any dawdling crap and pretty much verifying all Benteen said about his jaunt to the south west off Ash Creek.

Also, too much coffee. Or not enough. I suffer from the same "malady." I do not recall this at all. In fact, I believe you and I agree totally about Benteen. I do not know we disagree at all, on either Benteen or Reno. I think you may have this confused with my comments regarding Gray's timing of Benteen's advance down Reno Creek and his arrival on Reno Hill. If memory serves me correctly, I believe you defended Gray while at the same time doubting his overall work with Benteen. But, again, as far as I know the only place you and I disagree over this entire fray is from MTC on. Best wishes, Fred.

I've recently read Harper's book in digital mode, and I'm wondering if I've confused Fred with him, as he ended still not appreciative of Benteen. I recall being told on this forum that I'd be disappointed.
That is an odd book. He'd said he had new stuff from his interviews early in life and yet nothing new was included unless digital is different from print and/or I missed it entirely. The concluding chapters are written by hunkpapa and apparently don't coincide with Harper's views.

Somewhere-- recently, maybe by Henk/"hevat"-- I read that Harper "hated" Benteen, so like most others I am sure the book contains condemnations-- in whatever form-- of Benteen. I do not recall disagreeing with you-- at all, ever-- about Benteen. We did, initially, about Reno, but your arguments in his favor swayed me so much that I use them to this day (convoluted and distorted, I am sure... but within your ballpark) in Reno's defense. They were cogent, brilliant, and well-stated.... But enough of this character assassination. As for the Harper book, I again state, I have no intention of reading it, simply because I knew his views-- as well as those of Gordon Richard, who completed the book-- and reject both "authors" categorically. Harper's research may have been marvelous, prolific, and detailed, but his analysis was so far off I could no longer debate things with him. Best wishes, Fred.

Fred, Although I've little sympathy for Benteen, Harper tends to find fault in or ridicules even the most innocent of Benteen's actions, for example being a prolific writer of letters to his wife ("he must have developed a severe case of writer's cramp"). The fact that Custer seemed to have been an even more prolific writer of letters to his wife is mentioned with approval and without scathing remarks. BTW, if I remember correctly I didn't say that Harper hated Benteen but that he despised him. Although I returned the first volume of Harper's book I intend to keep his very helpful second volume with the appendices. All the best! Henk

Wait. WHAT second volume? DC, Casemate has published as an e-book all sources - letters, accounts, RCOI testimonies, etc. - consulted by Harper, including his notes. These notes are very informative. Best regards, Henk
