Beth That is the problem. Getting up the bluffs is not an easy task. I am not sure which ford HR has in his map. Maybe Gerry can help on that. Thompson's ford would be accessible at the bluffs north of Weir P. There is a good ford below Fencepost but it does not have a good access to the bluffs.

The Kuhlman ford offered a route across the river which was not exposed to mounted attacks which occured as happened. The retreat could have been concealed and defended if the object was to reach the bluffs.
Look at your map again its labeled Indians. You know that they were shooting at and hit one of French's troopers.
You think that Reno was going to take a ford with trail leading to the village.
Come on HR your better than that.

HR, you never directly answered my question about your having served in the military. You only said you were with Leonidas, which was a flippant way of saying no. Since you haven't served, please stop telling us that a field commander can't retreat without orders. That is pure crap and everyone on this board that ever served in any rank knows that. So kindly lay off trying to tell us how things work in the military.

Colt Are you sure he was being flippant? HR has insights that could only be gained by having been there. Regards Dave

Well, Dave, that's probably true. I forgot he was either immortal and has been around for all history's great battles, or else he is able to channel the dead and get first-hand information from them. Silly of me not to remember that.

I am going to be out of character here for a moment and approach this issue with some little degree of kindness, when no real empathy is warranted by actions.
HR is a guy with three or more jigsaw puzzle prints of this battle. Only one of these puzzle will portray a moderately accurate picture of what happened when assembled. The other two end up being Andy Warhole Tomato soup cans. The difference between those of us who attempt to rationally analyze this affair is that we pick through all the pieces of those three puzzles on the table, looking and test fitting, until the point where we have assembled enough of the correct puzzle to give us a reasonable approximation of what happened Still there are significant pieces missing. HR to the contrary, thinks all the pieces of all the puzzles fit somehow. He does not have the mental ability to separate the wheat from the chaff, or just does not want to

QC Here in the South when you can't say something nice about a person we say "Bless his heart." HR in his own inimitable way visualizes the LBH and wants to exchange posts with others. It would be impolite to ignore him and as AZ has pointed out, HR occasionally hits the mark. The downside is the clean up. If anyone has ever kept ducks on their carports they know that ducks are the messy creatures on earth. If HR could limit his pictures, images, word coloring and just share his thought (s) it would be easier to reply. How do we know for sure that HR is the one out of step? He could be right.
Regards
Dave

Dave Bingo!! We don't know. But there is plenty to allow for honest debate on a multitude of possible scenarios. Regards Mark

Well Bless your heart HR and clean up the duck crap. My duck is prettier than his! And somebody very close to me took the picture, shortly before one of his friends was bagged for dinner. Not a great deal of meat though. Goose breast is much more filling
Regards, Tom

Tub I would not change you avatar to the Wood Duck it would just create a duck-escalation that you would lose. My new Smithsonian Air & Space magazine has a wonderful article about the Convair R3Y. I would argue that she was the most beautiful of all the flying boats and would be a much better avatar. Regards
Dave
The same issue has an article about the F4 Phantom a ugly duckling that could FLY
