Just was wondering what the latest estimate was for the number of warriors at LBH? Read Indian accounts stating that many braves were away buffalo hunting. Also, I read a great article by Fox(West River History) that basically cuts the size of the village in half compared to most books I read. So....how many warriors were in the village?
Thanks,
Jim

Wow! I thought one of you guys who live and breath LBH would've responded in seconds. As for the Fox article, it appears in the book, Legacy: New Perspectives on the Battle of Little Bighorn. The book is a collection of essays from the 1994 Little Bighorn Legacy Symposium. Fox made a great argument for the size of the village being 1.5 miles long; ending at the Cheyenne camp at Ford B. He tells us of first-hand accounts that place the lower of the limit there, but also explains how the movement downstream of the village made soldiers believe the village was much larger. What soldiers thought was the static location of the village was actually the LOCATIONS of the village as it moved downstream.

I think you received no response simply because no one has any firm grasp on the numbers, nor will that ever really be the case in the future. Everyone though I believes has a working figure based upon what they have researched. The ones I have seen here and elsewhere range from 900 to 5000. My own personal estimate is in the 3000 to 3500 range, although I have no basis for that other than an average of others views. Sufficient to say the short answers are a lot and enough.

Well, I did a cartridge count found thing and compared it to the soldiers numbers. The results, after subtracting a bit for repeaters vs, singles and other factors were that there could have been 2500 warriors there. But, it is highly un- scientific what I did.Just guessing.

After reading this post, I want to say that if anyone takes the piss out of any of my posts In the future, I will copy and paste this post by Mr biginjunfight, then you will see what a thing of beauty my posts are compared to this childish piece of crap. I kid you not.

Ian: He would have been much more scientific had he flipped a coin. Heads it's 1000, tails it's 2000 and if it lands on the edge it's 3000. This man is not serious. He wants to type to see his name in print.
Maybe he thinks this is a casting call for a spot with Dew Drop and the AoD Boys.

I did a cartridge count found thing and compared it to the soldiers numbers. ? As you can tell by my number of posts, I am fairly new here and really don't know a lot about this thing. Can you tell me something about this "cartridge count found" method of yours. Sounds intriguing. Best wishes, Fred.

Fred: This young man is flummoxed by the coefficient of the calibre acceptance of the chamber as it relates to the muzzle, when divided by the diameter to the tenth power, then multiplied by shale content under the previous site of Fort Reno in the middle of nowhere Wyoming.
Of course that old fasioned answer of who the hell knows does not apply, unless one consults any of the various obscure sources, such as the ever popular 32nd of December 1912 issue of Field And Stream where someone who claims to be the brother of the next door neighbor of the cousin twice removed from a Company E survivor said there were to damned many, but he was otherwise nonspecific.

Not that young and not just trying to compete with you "experts".Stating something and then being derided and made to feel stupid is exactly why none of your "expert "opinions mean anything except that you read some books.Your big talk don't mean doodly squat as somebody said.I want to discuss and offer but you are making the same mistake Custer did, underestimating the situation.

If fitting in here requires kissing any of your horses arses, then I can't do that.I can however offer some good opinions and observations.I have never been to the battle area but would and am planning that.I have however kicked rocks in every state west of the Mississippi and am quite qualified to discuss indian arrowheads.Custer came within 5 miles of my house near Quartz Mtn Okla and I can show you where his man Gruber fell, for sure, and they recovered some of his articles. His bones are still there. No mystery either.

Disabuse you mind that any of us are overall experts. Each of us brings something of ourselves here to this board. You are new and don't understand our ways. Briefly they are this. Post what you honestly think about the particular subject matter under discussion. If you do so in a respectful manner you will be treated likewise. Occasional loss of temper is tolerated, but not for long. Healthy vigorous debate, short of shooting someone is OK too. Keep within these parameters and you will be OK. On the other hand if you continue the way you started - the new sheriff in town here to teach you fellows something - you will be treated like a red headed stepchild with jock rash. Now does that make sense to you. I hope so.

Should Sepp Dietrich have deployed his panzer's early on the first day of the Ardennes offensive?
