You are entitled to view the battle operationally or tactically in any manner you wish to. You see things from one perspective I see them from another. That is not at all unusual.
The United States Army did a review of its entire history in the 1930's when Campaign Participation Credits with their associated streamers for unit colors were first established. The background on these streamers are designed to indicate the war in question, while the blazon indicates the named campaign. Before this time units would embroider the names of battles on the colors, and it led to a great deal of confusion and an infinite number of standards, differing unit to unit.
As part of this effort all actions up to that time were examined and those not rejected were named and given exclusive dates. For Instance the Ardennes Campaign was limited December 1944 to January 1945. No dates are listed on campaign participation streamers with the exception of campaigns not given a formal name but an area such as Texas 1858.
In the main this was all done the setting of inclusive dates and the like to be able to give credit where it was thought credit is due. It is not an attempt to cover up, obfuscate, spin, manipulate, and it is certainly not meaningless. I greatly resent your implication here and call upon you to retract your words, said I assume, as a means to prove your point unnecessarily. I await your retraction.
Further for your information, the United States Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard use exactly the same system for determining campaign honors. I trust you do not wish to take them on and insult them also in one single afternoon.
