Unfortunately he died in 1981, I was only about 21 at the time and he did not share much about his service, I have done some research myself and come up with this. 114th LAA, 372nd Battery and he landed with the Canadians on Juno Beach HQ and 372nd Battery, 114th Light Antiaircraft Regiment RA manned six Crusader AA Mark I 40mm SP AA guns, each of which towed a second 40mm gun during the assault, and six wheeled 40mm SP AA guns. This was the Regiment he served with during the war, he was posted all over the UK before D Day, but as yet I have not found much. My Fathers Brother (Sgt Tony McCarthy served with the Royal Marine Commandos and won the Military Medal at Dieppe, he also saw action in Normandy with Lord Lovats Commandos, he has also passed away and I cannot find which No Commando he served. Regards Ian.

Ian: If your dad served in a AAA battalion (UK regiment) then he was a member of the Royal Artillery.
The Royal Marine Commandoes in Normandy were the 4th Brigade consisting of 41 - 46 - 47 - and 48 Commandoes. Sorry but that is a close as I can get it with my reference sources.

Ian, take your uncle's info to this site and someone should be able to help: www.commandoveterans.orgThis forum posts list the men of No. 4 Commando which I believe was an army commando unit and had a lance sergeant McCarthy assigned. www.commandoveterans.org/cdoForum/posts/list/935.pageBilly

Billy: Lovat commanded 4 Commando at Dieppe. He commandeed 1st Commando Brigade at Normandy and it noted for his march to relieve the Ox and Bucks. 40 Commando was the only RM Commando at Dieppe.
Ian: Are you sure your uncle was a Royal Marine. Since WWII the Commando mission is all RM. During the war though most Commandoes were Army units. Only the Commandos in the 40 series were RM I think.

Thanks to Billy and Quincannon. Billy I have E Mailed a guy called Geoff Murray about my Uncle (Thanks for the links) Quincannon I will hope to find the unit he was in through Billy's link, I will post any info I will receive. Yes my Dad was in the Royal Artillery, the only memento I have is is WO Crown which was a wrist band worn by WOs in hot weather (there sleeves were rolled up so the wrist band would show there rank). Regards Ian.
