Thanks to Tom Trevor for the reminder of this program. I meant to post it days ago. New evidence confirms that a man named Finkle was the lone white survivor of Custer's Last Stand. The two hour program airs at 9:00-11:00 PM Eastern.

For those able to tune in, there is a discussion about the Battle on BBC Radio 4 at 9.00 a.m., repeated at 9.30 p.m., involving Melvyn Bragg and his guests. Bragg is a serious broadcaster and his guests are always of a high calibre, so the discussion should be well worthwhile.

Both times cited are United Kingdom times so I hope you can calculate what time it needs to be in your area to hear the discussion. I have a health problem but I am still surviving. Thanks for your kind inquiry. Hunk

Well I just checked. It isn't on today but Thursday, May 19, 2011. Times are UK time so I guess I subtract 5 or 6 hours to get central time US which would be around 3 or 4 our time, morning or afternoon. Melvyn Bragg, aka the Londonlout, and guests. Maybe Elisabeth will be one of them. It sounds like a foreign language program though. Probably need an interpreter.
Thanks for the info though. I can probably start picking up the BBC news now.

I went looking for this BBC program and couldn't find it on the schedule. However I did find the podcast on iplayer which I am listening to now. It is the limey version and an intrepreter may be necessary. Basic info: Melvyn Bragg and his guests discuss the Battle of the Little Bighorn, also known as Custer's Last Stand. In 1876 a dispute between the American federal government and Native Americans over land rights led to an armed conflict now known as the Great Sioux War. An expeditionary federal force was sent out to coerce the Native Americans into reservations, and away from the gold reserves recently discovered in their traditional homelands. One of the officers in this expeditionary force was a Civil War hero, George Custer. While en route to his arranged rendezvous, Custer unexpectedly encountered a large group of Sioux and Cheyenne warriors. Disobeying orders, he decided to attack. Barely half an hour later, he and all 200 of his men lay dead. Custer's Last Stand has become one of the most famous and closely studied military engagements in American history. With: Kathleen Burk Professor of Modern and Contemporary History at University College, London Adam Smith Senior Lecturer in American History at University College London Saul David Professor of War Studies at the University of Buckingham. Producer: Thomas Morris. www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0112xfd/In_Our_Time_Custers_Last_Stand/bc

I had to stay in London overnight so did not get back in time for this morning's broadcast. Luckily it is repeated any minute now so I'm off to listen to it. Hunk

bc,
Britt thanks for taking the time to put that link up, I appreciate it very much. Thought it was well done except for the moderator. There was one man who I believe knew about the battle itself, and wanted to discuss it, but the moderator was more interested in the political implications. All in all though it was enjoyable, and thanks again for taking the time to post, so we can all enjoy it.
Be Well Dan

I was only throwing confetti but they said I was littering. I looked great in my uniform too. Hunk

For serious historians they were not able to get past the traditional renderings and for me, there was no attempt to take any objective view. I do wish though, that these programmes would try to get away from the 'Custer the glory seeker disobeyed his orders and attacked a day early' mantra. That matter is far more complex than that. Some of the historical background was succinctly put and I suppose it was inevitable that time constraints restricted a more wide ranging discussion, but I always expect too much from these documentaries I guess. Take care. Hunk

But then she stopped and expressed the disobeyance opinion again without getting to the sentence that left things open for Custer to do what he things best. They started out with equating GAC as the rock star & glory seeker wanting to become president. bc

Bragg's own blog on the matter was a generalised rambling that made no attempt to address the issues. Hunk

On the subject of Custer on the BBC, did the BBC series the wild west feature over in the states, one full show (one hour long) was titled Custers last stand, and had an English actor called Toby Stephens playing Custer, it was first shown in the UK in 2007 and I thought they did a good job with various re-enactors playing the troopers, it even showed the death of Mitch Boyer (they clubbed him). Regards Ian.
