Accurate?
I read Utley's Cavalier in Buckskin recently and did not read insight into Custer's personality. (I do admire the other Utley books I have read and have no quibble with this only do not see where Custer was a difficult commander) I have read much of the canon on LBH and Custer but not the above or the hagiographic work released shortly after his death.
Would like to read a book which provides a detail of life in Custer's cavalry regarding the factions and how they occurred and specifically what embittered Benteen against Custer.
Would Fougera or Barnitz be of use?
Thanks for the replies. I am new so kindly spare me. I do realize I know little with every book I read about the LBH.

Welcome, felixc! There is a new biography of Custer by Steve Alexander that should give insight into Custer's personality. Steve has portrayed Custer for many years, and I think most people who know him would agree that he knows Custer better than anyone now living. He has to get inside his head to portray him so well. I've got Glory-Hunter by Frederic F. Van de Water, but unread at present. I must admit to finding the image on the front cover a little bit less appealing than something more in the way of eye-catching, but very much a minor point.
