Dear forum neighbors: I am seeking information about the Northern Cheyenne <Little Big Man>, as distinguished from the Lakota <Little Big Man> (1840?-1887). Rootsweb's Tiyospaye index shows the Cheyenne man with a speculative life span of 1850?- . . . Does anyone have a photograph or any other information (including his Cheyenne name)? For that Rootsweb citation, see: freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mikestevens/2010-p/p196.htm#i35802 - Jim

For that Rootsweb citation, see: freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mikestevens/2010-p/p196.htm#i35802 - Jim Jim, I would be wary of the Rootsweb information from what I observe. The Rootsweb index states that Little Big Man was a Northern Cheyenne then cites him on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota during the 1891 U.S. Census. As Pine Ridge is a Lakota not a Cheyenne reservation I suspect that the index is about the Oglala Little Big Man, a follower of Crazy Horse. In Grinnell's "The Fighting Cheyenne" there is a reference on pages 286 and 291 to a Little Man but states that he was a Northern Arapahoe who fought with the Cheyenne. The same author in his two volume history of the Cheyenne Indians mentions Little Man twice but with no reference to his being an Arapahoe. In "The Cheyenne Way" by Llewellyn and Hoebel on Page 208 there is another mention of a Little Man as a distant 'brother' of Little Sea Shell. In "The Fighting Cheyenne" Grinnell refers to a Little Old Man who in 1838 was one of the chief men of the Crooked Lance Society. The same man is also mentioned in Volume II of "The Cheyenne Indians" as dying of cholera in 1849. The same character appears too in "The Cheyenne Way." None of this may help you, but as I say, be very cautious about reliance on the Rootsweb entry. Good luck with your search. "Hunk" papa

Thank you, "Hunk" Papa -- I take your caution about Rootsweb to heart.
