Well, my latest update on The Book.... It has been transferred to disc, and will be mailed off tomorrow. I wanted to have it done befor the 1yr anniversary, and Im just gettin it in... Fingers crossed that they love it and want to publish. Thank you again, to all of you who have helped not only with your great advice, but with your kind words about my Dad. This means alot to me, and I am truly very grateful that there are people out there that respected and admired my Dad enough to help me out I will update this thread as soon as I hear anything, but Im sure I will be going crazy in the meantime! Monday I plan on listening to Dads music collection, crying, drinking Dos Equis, and remembering the great man that I have had the honor of calling Daddy.

I hope Monday wasn't too hard for you. That was the day of my mom's funeral, so my heart was with you.
Keep us posted on the book!

Princess: After your father's passing I lost interest in the message board, as it was not the same without him (not that I was a significant contributor). I had not logged in again until today, when I did so hoping to learn that you were trying to get his manuscript published. If you do I DEFINITELY want to buy a copy. If you are not successful with this effort, while I'm certain you have other offers of assistance from Gordie's many friends, please let me know if I can assist you. I can at least get it considered by one of the university presses here in Texas that have published manuscripts on historical topics for me and/or the literary agent I use, who handles non-fiction, or if those fail can suggest a good self-publisher. His work, as you know, will have many fans. I would sincerely appreciate your contacting me at monteakers@yahoo.com. Best of luck on this very worthy project.--MA

Tori: After posting the message last night, I logged in this morning and read your first post in this thread, in which you asked for assistance in identifying chapters to submit to publishers for consideration. I apologize for not seeing it then, and this is too little too late considering you've already submitted it to a publisher, but I have copies of four of your father's chapters--"Reno's and Custer's March," "Benteen's March," "Reconstructing the Death Sites on Custer Field," and "Accounts Dealing with the Location and Condition of the Bodies." Any would be suitable for submission to a publisher or agent with a query or proposal, although one or more chapters on either Reno's battle or whatever Gordie wrote about the Last Stand Hill fight may be something a publisher would expect to see.
I don't know what publisher you are dealing with, but this is not a work you should have to pay anyone any money to get published, so please do not be sidetracked by "acceptance" from what is really a subsidy press or by agents who charge a reading fee. Also do not be discouraged if it is rejected several times, as most publishers target specific audiences and want books about specific topics, so that a submission often needs to be to the right press at the right time, and may be rejected even if written exceptionally well, as is your father's.
Then, once accepted, it will take up to a year to go through the various stages of copyediting, indexing, etc. before you hold a copy in your hand. If turning the manuscript into a book is your only goal, there are some good self-publishing places, like Lulu, that will do it to your specifications and time table, but I am confident that Gordie's manuscript will be readily accepted by either a university or niche publisher, if not one that is mainstream, when you make the right connection, and hopefully you already have. Do not expect to become wealthy from it, but the income is better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick (or a poke in the stick with a sharp eye) and is well worth the effort.
Again, I wish I'd seen your inquiry earlier, and hope you will drop me a message at the yahoo address I posted earlier, so that I know you saw this and so, perhaps, I can provide you with a little more anecdotal information that your father shared.--Monte

Alot of people have said that its not the same without him... That makes me both happy and a little sad... I am so happy that people loved/liked/respected him that they miss him still, but sad that there are others that feel a loss. Knowing my Dad as well as I did- I know that he would want everyone to miss him, but also continue with the banters and discussions, and back and forths that he used to participate in. Being a part of this forum and talking to different people made him happy (and also angry at times) and I know that if he could be reading all of your posts after his passing he would - with a big smile on his face and a chuckle... I WILL get his book out there, no matter which route I have to take, and I so appreciate the helping hands and words that I am getting along the way Thank you very much, all of you.

Princesstori
I'm new to the message room and never had a chance to exchange ideas with your dad, but by the responses here, he must have been a fine man. Let me add my condolences, may he rest in peace.

Tori, I'm so sorry I've been out of touch on this. Defense mechanism I guess. I have eight chapters and around fifteen appendices. I had also provided him with some Mnicoujou source material I was privy to. All this is probably too little, too late but keep in mind it's here.
Can you give us an update?

Sadee, at the risk of pre-empting what Tori has to say, I know she will forgive me if I say that it is difficult for her to give an up-date. There are matters in progress so it would not be prudent for her to comment at this stage. See my PM to you today. "Hunk"
