Hi All, A group of my CW cavalry reenacting friends are really interested in coming out to do the LBH event at some point in the near future (not in 2010 however). One of the guys who used to be in the unit went out several years ago and had a great time. I've checked out the websites for the reenactment itself, but found nothing about the ride that proceeds the event. We'd be interested in doing the event, but probably even more interested in doing the ride prior to it. As a group we like to be as historically accurate as possible, and we would come with all of our own gear. Some of us would probably need to rent horses though. If anyone has some advice on who to contact, or where to look for info I'd appreciate it. It's a ways off yet, but I'm thinking we would bring between 10-15 guys from all over the east coast. Take care, Tom Craig 1st Maine Cavalry www.mainecav.org

Take care, Tom Craig 1st Maine Cavalry www.mainecav.org Welcome Tom. You can join all the other re-enactors running around the boards. I'd sure like to participate in a LBH small unit reenactment of the ride down Reno Creek and over to the battlefield to get a feel for timings. Same for Benteen's ride. Most of the Realbird reenactment stuff is handled by Shawn Realbird. I met one of the Realbird's and he was a nice guy to me. Look around the board and do a search here as well as google. His email has been posted around here before. Everyone in that area has adopted the Green movement. Greenbacks talk. The LBHA set up a ride last summer with him. Do to time restraints, conflicts with other LBH activities going on prior to June 25, some rider inexperience, and cost restraints; it was shortened up from a full ride from the Crow's nest using their horses. Round trip from the Realbirds place at ford B on the MTC to the Crows nest is over 30 miles. One way added expense for trailers. I toyed with hauling my hay burner from Kansas but it was going to get very expensive because of gas pulling a trailer, stops along the way, caring for the horse on a trip and putting them up every night, coggins testing, and all the other stuff involved in hauling horses. Mine has all the shots but there can be problems with mixing horses together. It would have been hard to care for a horse and stay and attend the conference in Billings. As it was, I couldn't commit to coming to the LBH on the date they picked and thought it was pricy anyway. The price alone wouldn't have stopped me if the timing worked out. With the Realbirds being busy with their rides and reenactments, around June 25 isn't a good date. Pick another. You can also check around the board here and google for the Seventh Ranch on Reno Creek. I don't think they rent horses any more but they are set up for rides and can board horses. Either of them can help you get the permits and fees required by some the landowners to do this. Some of the land is Preservation Trust land and you just need to get their permission or be a member. I think last year, they did a ride from somewhere east to the LBH for about a week and a half or so for about $1800. There is a thread on it around here and it was advertised in True West magazine. They have a website as a separate tour company handled the details and Realbirds provided some horses, facilities, and guides, etc. Then they drilled around MTC and places and then participated in the Realbird reenactment. There is a group of people here planning a ride this summer. Some rode last summer with the lbha realbird ride and one rode on horses supplied by 7th ranch(Tori I think) although I heard they don't do that anymore. I don't know how critical or anal you and your reenactment buddies are about uniforms and equipment but the best I could do is a non-Indian war McClleland saddle and the only blue would be my Wrangler jeans. Good luck. bc

Hey there, Thanks for the input! I did get the sense from reading some of the old posts here on this forum that things were moving on a cash friendly basis out there. I guess I got some bad, or old information about what goes on leading up to the LBH reenactment. It was my understanding that reenactors got together to ride following Custer's route right up to the battlesite, and into the reenactment. My friend who went in the past joined in the ride at a mid point, and rode for a few days, not even going to the reenactment. It sounds like maybe that doesn't happen anymore? Or maybe I wasn't clear on what exactly I am looking for. We were/are hoping to participate in a reenactment of the ride, and then the battle reeanctment itself. If the ride doesn't happen anymore, so be it, and perhaps that's why I can't find any recent info on it online at this point. I figured posting here was a good place to start. I will take a look for the Realbirds, and thanks so much for the info! Take care, Tom Craig 1st Maine Cavalry www.mainecav.org
