Another Donovan, this time Terence, another Custer book. But the trend is upward, based upon the preview on the WEB. Quite readable, but his citations are often generations away from originals. The term 'numerous citations' he uses - as in "numerous citations in Stewart support that.." - again falls victim to the possibility that ALL of the citations have but one source, and that dubious. tinyurl.com/mr44xkAlso, he thinks there's a "Come Quick" order from Custer to Benteen, although he quotes it right in other spots. Pretty much supports Benteen, who appears as a recognizeable man, and not a punching bag. Mumble...........Still: come quick?Yes, this was mentioned at the Lady's Site, but given the amount of school girl PM's - plus an entire thread (you're all jealous, admit it...) - they've dedicated to me, they can't complain. Of course, they will. They can't help themselves. They need more moderators; people don't feel safe enough.

DC, I don't know what awakened you from your coma but would you please spend your time on the advocates of Native American superheroedom rather than replow old ground on Jim's work. Billy

Markland, "Jim's" work is only mentioned so that it's clear the two authors are distinct, and that's it. With two Donovans and a Donahue writing recent books on Custer, I thought it might get confusing. I don't replow that barren, salted, ground.
However, since you haven't admitted reading A Terrible Book yet, your standing to dictate who can talk about it and when isn't sufficient anyway.
I wasn't in a coma. I was resting my eyes and testing a new drool jar.

You're thinking of Brazen Strumpet.

I just finished reading Brazen Trumpet and I thought it was well thought out. I agree with what the author seems to conclude: That Benteen did as well as he could under the circumstances. As I said elsewhere on this board, I would go one step more and say he should have gotten the Medal of Honor for his actions on the bluffs, including the two charges downhill against Indians who had them surrounded. And the author appears to blame Custer for Custer's actions, which I think is refreshing, as Custer charged a big village and disregarded intelligence to that effect. He divided his command, twice, allowing Benteen and Reno to go their separate ways. He had Reno believing he would back him up at the charge of the village, etc etc. All in all, it was a good read. I still like Son of the Morning Star the best, because of the insightful asides it offers. And its details. I would recommend this book to anyone, especially those who think Benteen should not only not have been criticized, but should have been rewarded for his actions.
