Jim--
I checked the flights from here. There's an operation down here that rents Conestogas. They guarantee a quicker arrival date! And that's without the mules!
Best wishes, Fred.

Diane--It's the Peninsula Civil War Roundtable in San Mateo. The topic is "Little Bighorn, Why and What Happened", by Lt. Col. Ed Reed, Tuesday, January 17. Here is a link to their website: www.peninsulacivilwarroundtable.org/

Melani--
If you go, take some notes. It would be interesting to know this guy's viewpoint. Also, is he active army, NG, USAR, or retired. I'd appreciate it.
Thanks & best wishes, Fred.

Fred-- Get used to it. Unless you live in Salt Lake City, Denver or Phoenix, there is practically no direct way to Billings,MT. Be prepared to wait in airport terminals and to be stuffed into a very small aircraft ... but the activities are well worth it--as is the cool weather! Regards, Leyton McLean

Regards, Leyton McLean I flew into Billings from Portland. No connections and on a decently sized aircraft, both there and back. Maybe not what most are used to on the East Coast or in huge cities, but it was by no means a puddlejumper.

Crab--
Don't forget the folks in the St. Paul/Minneapolis area. An entire population can get to Billings on Northwest with no stop-overs anywhere.

Melani,
Thanks for the CW Roundtable info. I will pass it along to friends, and I've posted the event on the new California sub-board in the In Search of . . . Places of Interest forum.

Lt. Col. Charles J. Reed, USA, Ret. was supposed to be the presenter, and was going to be in period uniform. He is a member of the San Francisco Civil War Roundtable, and it turns out I met him briefly a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, he developed a last minute conflict, so the emergency presentation was on Sen. Thomas Hart Benton. The LBH event has been rescheduled for May 17--at least, we think so. It seems that this particular group--the Peninsula CWRT--is currently trying to "reorganize," and their webiste is not always perfect, so now we have phone numbers to check as well.

I was wondering if the speaker was Corky Reed. He usually sends out a lot of e-mails, but I haven't heard from him lately. I know he has a lot of health problems, so I hope he's OK.
Thanks for the update, Melani. I hope you enjoyed it!

It was fine, but I'll enjoy the LBH one more. They didn't seem to indicate that it was health problems. I have just spent the day working with one of my 15 bosses on the Library Friends Board, who is also treasurer of the SFCWRT, and she knows him well, and didn't seem to know about anything wrong. I met him briefly a few weeks ago at a CW "encampment" that they organized for SF school kids. I met so many people all at once that day that I didn't remember his name (not to mention the website had it wrong!).

I've flown from San Diego into Billings a couple times, with changing planes in Salt Lake City. Not a bad trip, really. And I've stayed at the All American Inn both times, the last time with el crab and a couple other guys. It worked out well because we were able to get a two-bedroom. Finding a decent place to eat is another thing. We ate next door at the casino. Lousy service, but that can always change. I've eaten at the famous "Purple Cow" on the other or east side of the freeway. Now there's a real culinary experience. As for camping, I've camped at the KOA about two miles east of Hardin and the Purple Cow. It's a nice place to use as a home base because it's got shade and its proximity to the LBH. I'd love to try the 7th Camp that Diane mentioned. I've read a lot about it, but it doesn't appear to have any shade. If you're in an RV and you're there in the summer, shade becomes important or you'll wind up staying in your RV all day. Well, I wouldn't, but my wife would. In fact, she hates the heat so much, this allows me to make my LBH trips alone, meeting el crab and others to do our own traipsing around.
