Diane:
If I remember correctly, and I just might, the route had been changed principally because of the threats against JFK, and particularly that "Wanted Poster" that had been published. The change was from an actual motorcade through the streets of downtown to a route that would bypass most of that area and get the President to the airfield quickly and minimizing exposure to huge crowds, while still giving the appearance that nobody was caving in to the threats.
Although the route had been changed, it was not kept secret. So whoever the actual shooters were, they could have been in place well beforehand, with unrestricted fields of fire - assuming one thinks that there was more than one shooter, that whoever did the shooting was actually capable of hitting the target, and that the weapon(s) used were suitable to the task.
I used to be a reasonably good shooter, and I would never have attempted such a task with a second-rate, second-hand, military-surplus rifle equipped with inferior optics which were not mounted properly to begin with.

Sigh… Let me now add Great Truth #6 - Elvis is STILL dead and always has been. (By the way, the daughter of the woman who wrote the first ‘Elvis lives’ book worked for me for several months in the late 1980s)
Let’s get practical. Factoring in the great number of agencies and people allegedly involved, and who would need to be involved, in a ‘Kennedy Caper,’ and the enormous cover-up in its aftermath, how come we haven’t heard anything credible - that is ’verifiable’ - in forty-five years? Just think it through, peps.
Accepting a contract on the President of the USA, and accomplishing the ‘mission,’ is a job for 100 men or just one. Anything in between won’t likely be successful, and... NO! I am not suggesting that Oswald accepted any sort of contract.
I don’t think that the route was changed either. Gordie might remember better, but I do recall that the issue came up aboard AF-1, and the Secret Service reccomended changing to a more direct route to the luncheon site, but Kennedy ordered that the original route be stuck to. The presidential limo had a removable bullet-proof bubble top that Kennedy himself also vetoed using that day, so, I guess we need to add him to the list of conspirators too.
As to Oswald’s weaponry, Gordie - well, Gunnery Sergeant Hartman said it all: “The deadliest weapon in the world is a marine and his rifle…. Your rifle is only a tool. It is a hard heart that kills.”
Then again... The simple truth doesn’t sell many books about Kennedy or Elvis, or even Custer (now that I think about it), so have a ball.

In any crowd of thousands to see someone famous, it's not unreasonable that a couple are there to kill the celebrity unknown to each other. If one is successful, and the police uncover a few of those there with evil intent, the impetus is to connect them in a conspiracy, although no basis to do so. The Cernak assissination is a good example. People assumed he was the target, but it was FDR, and incredible conspiracy theories abounded without reason other than hysteria.
Conspiracies rarely exist and more rarely yet work. It's the dedicated and generally insane lone gunman (or woman; look at the refuse going after Ford, and only incompetence of the first order saved him) or bomb thrower or knife adept, against which there is no real protection. Who would have thought that such a nonentity could have gotten so near Reagan in 1980 after the previous 15 years? The Lincoln conspiracy fell apart twice before Booth, alone, pulled it off, nearly flubbed it, and Lincoln had zippo protection. The Black Hand in 1914 fell apart and Princep did it alone. All the anarchist assassins world wide failed unless alone in the 19th century.
The insistence about conspiracy against JFK is almost entirely because of the reaction to his head shot. Innocents of gun shots (like me and most of us at the time) assume the head jerking back along with the skull fragment meant a shot had to come from the front and the grassy knoll. Not so, and further, Kennedy was in a restrictive back brace that decreed his body's movements. Further, Mark Lane, a lawyer for the Oswalds, easily installed all sorts of falsehoods to a gullible press posing as objective while representing Oswald's family.
Just watching the bovine police procedures in the news is enough to make anyone gag today. Still, the computer studies are pretty compelling.
When you stand at the Depository window, I was amazed what an easy shot it was - nearly a possible pistol shot - for a guy with a sight and rifle. What damage to the rifle there may have been could be explained by Oswald's throwing it where he did in haste, or even the incompetent evidence procedures and actions of the idiot police.
Kennedy was as conservative as a Democrat could be, and no conservative conspiracy would want LBJ, an actual liberal. No liberal conspiracy would want Kennedy dead because they thought he'd come around. LBJ wouldn't be so stupid to have him killed and then keep the same cabinet and, in any case, live in fear of being thought soft, nor have him killed in his own state to insure the suspicion.
Everything I've read about the rifle used says its a decent weapon, reliable. It was certainly fine for the job.
And, those conspiracy types are there today, saying those United planes were equipped with missiles that were fired by the planes fifteen feet from the Towers (there's a flash of light, obviously a missile, is their logic) and that a missile and not a plane hit the Pentagon. And, of course, that the towers fell by pre installed explosives with the exact physics and pre knowledge of the exact weight, velocity, and precise location of the planes hitting them all factored in.
Like NA's fifty year anniversary newly revealed details of the LS, there are people trying to immortalize themselves by providing new details about "that fateful day." Boredom and gullibility are bar stool buddies and dangerous as such.
