New member from Texas here, hence my username. I've had a lifelong interest in Custer and the Little Bighorn, but it's only been in the past few years that I've seriously studying the battle.
I look forward to learning a lot here!

Welcome aboard although I will say that you have enough Indian Wars history in Texas to satisfy even the most ardent enthusiast; you just don't have the Custer Cluster Billy

Yeah, luther [may I call you John?], welcome indeed. We need someone from Texas to balance out the Kansans and Floridians, not that there's anything wrong with them. Forget I said anything, and don't mention it to any of the Kansans or Floridians.........................
Post away, and damn the torpedoes!!

"Luther,"
Whereabouts in that big state? I spent three years in the 8th Cavalry at Ft Hood...most God-forsaken land I've ever served in, and that includes Korea. <g> Air as humid as Houston, but land as dry as El Paso...worst of both worlds.
Trust you are in a pleasanter clime...ride horses?

Hi Clair,
Well, I'm in Austin so Ft. Hood is next door if we use Texas scale! Still, a bit more green down here along the Colorado- Custer didn't think too badly about it, I suppose.

Austin's a nice area...very different from Killeen, due to the river and lakes, I suppose. Are you at Univ. of Texas, then? What branch do you hope to enter? BTW, being down there you would really appreciate the history Jeff Davis's Own, by James Arnold. It details a lot of action in your area, and was Custer's original regiment upon graduating from West Point during the War. Tells a lot about cavalry life on the frontier. Clair

Yep, I'm down here at UT. I'd love to branch armor, especially if I can get some cav assignments in there- all those years of being a Custer buff ingrained themselves a little too deeply ;D

My wife's son works at Wembley Glass works in San Marcos. One of the few "blue" areas in all of Texas.
He regularly goes to Austin for the entertainment.

I'm not sure what the prospects are these days for ROTC graduates getting their first choice in branches, much less assignments. But many who didn't get their first choice branch transferred after a couple years and ended up where they were so inclined to be. Your branch really can make a difference in the kinds of officers and NCOs you will be serving with...so take care to pick one that matches your personality and desired environment. But if you like Custer and the LBH, you are pretty well set to be a cavalryman, I'd wager...you'll be bored with infantry (light infantry might appeal if you can get Abn/Rngr), and the artillery guys will drive you nuts with techno-details. Like the proper definition of "indirect fire." <BG> Clair
