Since I've already made a few posts, I thought I might introduce myself. My name is Greg Hawkins and I live in Woodstock, Ga. I grew up in Southern Illinois. I got hooked on GAC in the late 50's in Grade School. I believe I read Jay Monaghan's Book or one of the early LBH books. Got re-hooked in the 80's with Connell's SOMS. I guess History has always been an area where I dwell. I moved to the North Metro Atlanta area in 1983 and introduced myself to the Civil War. I read "Sherman's March" and while thumbing the bibliography dicovered that several quotes were from "A History of the 30th Illinois" and the author (Granvile B McDonald 1916) was from Sparta Ill, and my home town! Well, Sparta is about 3200 people and I'm sure a lot less in the CW. I researched and wrote an article for the county paper. I'm about 60 books into the CW and still going. Like several other folks on this web page, I'm a Viet Nam Veteran (5th Bn 60th Inf 9th Div 1/68-9/68, 1st Bn 16th Inf 1st Div 9/68-1/69). Oh, and by the way my GGG Grandpa is buried next to Moses Austin in Petosi, Mo. (They fought in the Revolutionary War together). Five of John Hawkins' children went to Texas with Moses Austins' Son, Stephen F Austin. Two were executed at Goliad.

Greg aka runaheap -
Excuse my failure to extend a welcome to the board earlier, and do not take offense at my 'hope it was a woman' remark. Personally, I thought I'd NEVER live down that time in the Philippines, when I could have SWORN on a stack of Bibles, that... nawh... it's a long story... maybe another time.
Gordie, my pal and mentor from the Great White Wastelands of the Frozen North, makes me sound like an alcoholic. This is NOT true. I am a drunk, not an alcoholic! Drunks refuse to attend those meetings. We have our pride.
Again, welcome to the board.

Greg,
Thanks for your service...you were in 'Nam during the same time frame as my father. He was also 1st ID, but worked mostly for MACV as he was an Ordnance officer.
Glad to meet you...
Clair (who did time at Fort Riley, too <g>)
