Probably everyone knows this but me, but I just discovered that Bob Reece's talents extend to another organization -- Friends of the Nez Perce Battlefields. I've just spent some time there and there is some excellent information including an historial review of the campaign by John Doerner on the 7th Cavalry's role there. www.friendsnezpercebattlefields.org/7th-cavalry-in-the-nez-perce-war.htm

A great story of courage and endurance. The testimony by the 7th trooper says it all. Interestingly it shows Miles wasn't averse to taking hostages, even under a flag of truce.

you could even wonder if without the hostage taking he would have made it to the border.
that Joseph had a hard time with the 5th infantry & the 7th cavalry on his trail was to be expected. but with cheyenne and crow enlisted as scouts and fighting, looking glass shot by a "sioux", crazy horse having a hard time to withheld oglalas to enlist if my memory is correct, what a mess among the plain NDN and what a sad story.
in my opinion chief joseph was the best us army fighter ever with his sharpshooters and rearguards. his story makes me as sad as the killing of SB. too bad the 2 could not unite and enjoy some more years of freedom with the last herds up north.

replying myself just had another thought on Joseph and his braves today : his exemple should be enough proof that those who state that some 200 cavalrymen should normally be enough to run over a 1000 indians are 100% wrong. Here 600 + cavalrymen + the 5th infantry could not beat - 300 warriors that had to take care off children and family at the same time in direct confrontation after months of hunger & travel. I had red the story several times but had skipped the treacherous Miles using the truce flag to lie Joseph in. It is even in Dee Brown's review. Bearcoat's image takes a bad blow here. Otherwise most would have fled with white Bird to Canada I bet. too bad he did not join SB at the LBH a year earlier . I wonder where the nez perce got their superbe fighting skills from having been at peace with the whites and not especially raiding on other tribes... anybody has an opinion?
