ELK POINT, S.D. -- The Union County Historical Society 2008 Spring Fling will be Saturday, April 5, at the United Parish in Elk Point. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and a catered meal will be served at 6:30 p.m.
The 7:30 p.m. program will feature Joyce Jefferson, a storyteller from Rapid City, S.D., portraying Sarah "Aunt Sally" Campbell, cook for the 1874 Custer expedition.
Jefferson's interpretation of Sarah Campbell's life, includes song, poetry and narration. Campbell is buried in the little community of Galina near Deadwood, S.D.
Campbell, who probably was born into slavery in Kentucky, traveled the Missouri River on steamboats for years. She was in Bismarck, Dakota Territory, when Custer was commissioned to survey the Black Hills of Dakota Territory. She signed on as a cook with the expedition and became known as "Aunt Sally" to both soldiers and miners.
Advance tickets for the dinner are $12.50 per person and may be purchased by contacting Sherri McKee at (605) 565-2252. There will be a limited number of dinner tickets available at the door. The chatauqua-style program will be open to the public at no charge. Article: www.siouxcityjournal.com/articles/2008/03/18/news_living/local/c92be4e39f7477928625740f0081e6f2.txt
