I have no idea if that is thee MST. But with a smile and a flirtatious twinkle in her eye, she may have more attractive than that picture shows. All those early pictures as all so unflattering.
Interesting that the daughter that's buried at Ft Laramie was also in love with a soldier, at least that's the tale Chiaventone spins in Moon of Bitter Cold. I've never found his historical fiction to stray far from the facts -- maybe someone has read more of the tale. He describes the elaborate funeral Colonel Maynardier provides for Brings Back Water and speaks of "her Captain" and her conversion to Christianity. Chiaventone says she died of the 'coughing sickness' in the winter of 1866.

Yes those early photos leave a lot to be desired. Back then the exposure time was LONG and the poser had to sit for a long time while the photo was taken.
Still, I bet MST was quite a "looker" in real life and it's not difficult for a white man to became "infatuated" about what she had to "offer."

Two pictures of Spotted Tail's family Spotted Tail's daughters Spotted Tail. wife and MST - 1881 In the first photograph MST is apparently seated on the right, as she is also in the one taken in 1881. jc

alfuso, lucky you ... clw, the daughter-in-love-with-soldier story turns up all over the place, so it's probably true -- or as true as any story from the West of those days. There was even a version of it in the New York Times in 1877. Hope this link works (I lost my tinyurl facility when my computer was last upgraded) but if it doesn't, simply Googling "Spotted Tail daughter" should bring it up among the very first hits. query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9505E0DC133FE63BBC4D52DFB166838C669FDE
