Glad you were able to look at it that way ... (Hate to tell you this, but today it's glorious sunshine!)
Splendid photos on your blog. Especially the dancing horse.

Speaking of weather, and believe me I know how changeable it can be, can someone give me the skinny on the climes in England, Scotland and Ireland say mid-September to mid-October? Is it into the rainy season? Does the weather make sightseeing iffy? How about the month of September on its own?
Hear my tiny voice [like that dude in the first version of The Fly], "Help me....help me....help me......

Gordie, All I can say --is that when I went to Manchester, Uk in mid August 1990- well I just about froze most days. I remember being at the beach at Southport, it was cold in the low 50's and some nut was in short pants! My British friend said that he could relate to the nut-cause it wasn't a vacation unless you wear shorts! In 2 weeks the highest it ever got was 74 degrees. Most days windy , cloudy, and damp. But it never stopped me from going places.

I'm afraid Brits of my generation regard 74 degrees as just about perfection: hot, but not too hot. With global warming, our summers (July/August at least) now frequently hover around the 80s or 90s. But with no guarantee -- you could just as easily be hit with a day or two in the 50s. September, however, is usually gorgeous. The proverbial Indian summer. The only downside is that the days are getting shorter, but that's OK: you'd still get a full day's daylight for sightseeing. All you don't get are the gorgeous long evenings -- daylight till 10 p.m., or far later in the north of Scotland -- that you'd get in midsummer. With luck, October can still be delightful too. A little less warm as a rule, and of course the days even shorter, but a very pleasant month.
There is no rainy season, alas; it can rain any time, at the drop of a hat. But for that, in my view, the nastiest summer month is August. That's when we tend to get tedious things like thunderstorms and frequent cloudbursts. Nicest months: May/June, or September/October. So I think you've picked a winner there, Gordie. (By the way, forgot to say happy birthday ...)

Thanks, Elisabeth.I was leaning toward a late August start, but September sounds great. When I was there in '92 it was late May going into June, and early July when I got back from mainland Europe. The weather throughout was great, slightly warm for me in Greece, but otherwise fine.
If I hafta miss the Tattoo, that will give me an incentive to go back again.
And thanks also for the birthday wishes.

All:
Big Gordie is off for a big jaunt into the dim mists of memory. Those of you fortunate enough [LOL] to have become my special friends, and you know who you are, will find me mostly receptive to Email contacts.
After reading some of the recent posts on these boards, I find myself unable to continue posting anything other than junk. Really serious discussion of really topical, well topics is good word, appear to be dwindling to the point of non-existence. Rehash is the order of the day "What Should Benteen Have Done?" "What Time Was It Really - Has The Sun Transit Been Considered Yet?" "What On Earth Did That Last Message To Benteen Really And Tuly Mean?" "Were There Any Really Bad Indians?" "Can Anyone See The Forest For The Trees?"
And let's all plan a trip to New York, so that we can look at a pavement and exclaim "Look!! Custer might have walked doen this ver street on his way to a hotel which has not existed for over a hundred years."
I think Michael had the right idea. I'm sure that he looks in from time to time, the same way that I will; but simply ran out of gas, just as I have. So like Nathan Brittles, I ride off to the refuge of all old men............
I thank you all for the good memories and for the useful information you have imparted to me. Enjoy and regards.

Very true that we sometime end up discussing the same topics . . . but how else to find an answer?
Don't the police constantly ask the same questions hoping to find something new that was overlooked?
There is still much to discuss about the LBH. Maybe someone will turn up the Rosetta Stone or trunk full of letters will turn up when someone's great-grand parent dies only to discover Custer was killed at the ford and Reno wasn't drunk, just "disoriented" or that Rain-in-the-Face did in fact give TC the "special of the day" and Meotzi wasn't Custer's child but Benteen's!
I'll take a line from SHANE:
Come back Gordie . . . come back. Gordie, come back!

yankee:
Thank you for the compliment; but I have returned only to let everyone who is interested know that I am enjoying the respite from having to make things up to post on the boards, and, like Fred, am getting some extra time to read and to dig up sources. I am also in good health, or a reasonable facsimile thereof for an old guy who is decrepit and generally achy. But I still look good.
A couple of members have become fairly regular correspondents, and I extended an invitation to ALL to Email me should they choose to seek information, opinion, or music from the dark ages, not realizing that same ALL might not have made note of my Email address before I checked out. It was Fred's post about not having the chance to talk over the fights with me that led to this short comeback .
I have stuck my Email address down at the bottom in the whatever-they-call-it section so that it will always be there for those interested. To emphasize the point, it is:
biggordie@hotmail.com
I also have MSN Messenger, but have no idea how that works and never look to see if anyone has messaged me. Email is hard enough for me to grasp [don't tell my kids, who still think I am the brightest star in the firmament] - I am still trying to figure out how I created folders for some peole and can't do it anymore [never mind, Larry, I just throw everything new into New Folder, and I'm happy with that].
Michael, FGS if you read this, drop me a note to let me know how you're doing.
As to the Big Jaunt, the latest news is that I have pretty much settled on a week in London, followed by a tour that covers much of the territory I missed in 1992. Much more of Scotland, a week or so in Ireland and Northern Ireland, a few days in Wales, and parts of England I've never visited [Cornwall and like that]. I am on budget, and my book list has now been reduced to three [one of which hasn't been published quite yet - Donohue's, which is mentioned on another thread].*
Those of you who owe me beers, and or a pub pie, and you know who you are, can expect to hear from me before I take off [or can write me whenever you want to] to see if we can't get together when I'm either in London or on the tour. Remember that it isn't until summer 2009.
In the meanwhile, I wish all of you, young and old, new members and old hands, believers and cynics, the best of health and prosperity for yourselves and, most importantly, those you hold dear, in the coming years.
My next scheduled visit to LBH will be 2010. I need to clear up a point or two regarding some of the markers. The book, which is so eagerly anticipated by two or three people, will be finished sometime after that. I'm going to start new writing and rewrites shortly, as soon as I can make up some more stuff.**
Regards to all, and hasta manana.............
Gordie
*Fred - you too can arrange access to the basement.
** All - Re: Cedar Coulee. Stand at the top of it and look down, and ask yourself if you would take 5 companies of cavalry down there, never mind at speed.
And having writ, moves on..............................

The "other" forum at least now is reasonable and without the stamping and stomping of feet and the insults when there are disagreements.
Still . . . I owe my allegiance to THIS forum.
