I will be in the vicinity of the Little Bighorn Battlefield from 17 June until 27 June, and will be arranging a tour of some of the surrounding areas to take place, hopefully, on 25 June. Details will be posted as confirmed.
I invite anyone who would like to help an old crippled-up gentleman to join me on the tour, on one of my visits to the Battlefield, or to treat me to a few beers [Markland, you already owe me 3 or 4 or 11].
I would also repeat my invitation to all to Email or PM me with their requests for specific photographs of specific areas/times/anthills etc., since the planning is now getting into the serious stages.
Elisabeth - if you can't make it over, feel free to add to your want list for photos. By next June, I'll maybe know how to post or Email them.

Not by the hair on your chinny-chin-chin. We're still on for 2009. Did I not read somewhere that you and Darkcloud are hooking up in 2008? is that before or after my dates, or do you want to romance him all by your ownself?

My son and his family are coming for Christmas, so that that part of my trip next year is no longer necessary, and I have been threatened with bodily harm if I do not visit my brother, my old school chums, and my former best friend whom I have not seen for 30 years. Since they outnumber me some thirty to one, which is worse odds than Custer faced, and since I am an old, feeble, decrepit chap who is no longer able to defend himself, I have decided to forego my trip to LBH in 2008, and will instead plan on 2010, which will make an even 50 years that I have been studying these fights. Besides which, my daughter is being married in August.
2009 is now Europe - at least Great Britain and Ireland and, hopefully Austria.
Those of you who requested specific photos or observations should check with Fred to see if he can help with something from his wonderful collection of photos, and his observations on the fields.

Gordie, I'll try and make your 2010 tour. Bring along a guitar as I want you to teach me "Kicks" by Paul Revere and the Raiders!

Gordie-
Glad to hear that - one way or another - you're getting out of the attic.
Congratulations on your daughter's wedding. But, grab your wallet, Dad. Hope there's enough left for your Continental jaunt after that.
M "BUT DAD!...It's only a string quartet. HELLO? There's only four of them. And besides, they have their own tuxedos already! Oh, and the caterer isn't sure that the auditorium we've picked is actually big enough. So, I figured that it really wouldn't cost all that much more to....." Well, that's how I remember it anyway.

Broken Wind:
My little girl, who as Ethan Edwards said, is not a little girl anymore, is getting married on the beach at a nearby lake. They are renting a house in the lakeside town for both the bachelor party and the reception, are making their own cake, having a barbecue "dinner" and will cater the affair themselves, i.e. do all the cooking and etc. I was gonna actually officiate at the wedding, since the bride will not take the traditional vows, but I could not find an on-line "church" that would give me credentials. They all said that I would cast their religions in a bad light and detract from the seriosity of their teachings. Go figure.
I have budgeted $4.37 for the wedding, and have been told that I not only don't have to wear a suit and tie, let alone a tux, but that I may be denied admittance to the township if I show up looking at all reputable [which would have been doubtful anyway].
Music will be provided by Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump; Four Drummers in Search of A Lead Singer;and a local favorite: Stuffed Spirit Bears. Markland recommended the first two, so how wrong can it be?
I only hope that there are lots of cameras being zoomed in on the festivities. It oughta be one of the more memorable events of the summer - might rival the 4X4 Challenge, which, come to think of it, is happenoing on the same day at the same location.

Yeah, yeah, yeah...... They start out with the old, 'we can do most of it ourselves.' Hopefully the master plan will stay stuck. "Wishing you many good lucks." - Billy Fish
But seriously - An idea might be to buy up a bunch of disposable cameras and set them around on the tables/beach blankets for guests to just snap any old pictures with. Put a drop box at the door for when they're used up, and dump the whole thing on the counter where you get them developed. The results are usually pretty good. And always fun. Few of the cameras 'walk away.'
Just a silly thought.

I've seen that mentioned before, and I think will be done this time around. The photographer who was to cover my wedding had to beg off an hour beforehand, due to an emergency delivery of his pregnant wife, and we wound up with three or four pictures in the church, two outside and another three or four at the reception. In retrospect, none would have been fine with me, although I WAS a good looking not-so-young fellow then, and my wife was absolutely gorgeous. We did our own wedding, except for the reception, which was small and cheap ["intimate" one might say]. Anyone for another peanut butter sandwich? How about a beer? One per person only, please.......

Damn; would love to go myself but over her in the UK. Some time, some year I guess. Would love the tour with sensible guys who know their history and just kneel in the grass and listen to the wind. Know what I mean?

I know exactly what you mean, Steve, and welcome to both the boards and the club [of wind listeners and aura absorbers - WIAA]. Watch for future news of Big Gordie's New Big Stagger and pencil yourself in for 2010. By the by, 2009 is My England and Wherever Tour, and I plan on meeting up with several members of the boards [some of whom may not be aware of this intent], and hope that might include you [the more people I can caj a beer from the better].
I see that you are principally interested in the Battle of the Rosebud and the 1876/7 campaigns following LBH. Since I have no idea of what you've already read/bought, why not drop me a PM or an Email and I'll perhaps be able to give you a couple of recommends.

Gary: Current "plans" - and I do use the word loosely - are to cover some areas that I missed on my previous visit, which involved five or six days in London and a whirlwind tour of England and Scotland. We saw a lot, but not a lot of in-depth probing. London is just so God-awful expensive that I'm almost tempted to give it a complete miss this time .
Definitely, I need to spend some time in the southwest - Stonehenge and the like - and I'd like to get across to Ireland for a few days. Scotland, of course, is a must for me, at least Edinburgh is. Were I still young and athletic, I'd spend an entire summer [at least] meandering around the countryside, camping wherever it is allowed, and sleeping in fields where the owners would permit. Conversely, were I wealthy, I'd spend a leisurely summer doing all the spots and living in the best hotels. Unfortunately.........................
Anyway, there is no itinerary set [I've still got a year and a half to save and plan], and I will be calling upon some of the members here, such as Elisabeth, Mike Fox, Hunkpapa and your own good self, for suggestions as to things to see and places to stay [on the cheap], and etc etc etc.*
You'll definitely hear from me in the future.

Delighted!
One thing about London: it's revoltingly expensive in itself -- but since we're a nation of commuters, there are any numbers of places outside Central London where you can stay a lot more reasonably, and travel in for the day. Some good deals to be had on tube/bus/train fares, especially with a bit of foresight. (Or even without.)
I met a very nice Canadian lady on a train a while ago who was singing the praises of two brilliant airlines: you might want to check out flyzoom.com and flyglobespan.com. From what she said, they offer full-service flights at economy-airline prices -- which can't be bad. Including Scottish destinations, if I remember correctly, so Scotland could be a good entry point.
Melani will confirm that the train network, in the south at least, is pretty good. (Not so great to the north of London, as the companies that run it there -- since privatisation -- are either useless or grasping, it's hard to decide which. I suspect both.) For really cheap travel, look at the National Express bus network. Much slower than trains, thanks to the congestion on our roads, but not totally insufferable. Not too bad for place-to-place stuff. But trains are far better for enjoying the landscape en route.
Look forward to your serious planning phase!
