Walt--good points--I can see Custer going to the ford. But. what do you think his mission was? Did he leave "L" "I" and "C" on Luce to await Benteen? Do you think Custer was trying to attack at that point? If Custer went to the ford, then my original question comes up--Was it that simple, did Custer take the entire command to the ford as warriors claim? Remember, Martini testified that he saw Custer retreating from the flat at the ford (B)--Maybe he really meant Custer and not just using his name to describe two companies--Custer would be easily distinguished by his dress and by Martini--I'm staring to think that he did go to the ford with the majority of his command--possibly leaving a few troopers to await Benteen--but would he attack without the packs that he sent for? Wouldn't the packs be used more for a defensive stand rather than offensive? As for recalling Yates--I meant that Custer could have seen the village from the high ridges and not MTC--he could have seen the mass of warriors advancing to the ford from the village and further north where the pony herds were.

I think Custer's message for Benteen to come quick was more important than the ammo . . . even though extra ammo would be needed. More men meant a better chance of a successful attack on the far end of the village and have the extra men to counter the large force of warriors.

I'm starting to get a different picture here---Custer sends Yates to ford "B" only to be repulsed and reunite with Custer on Calhoun--Custer deploys "C, L and I" at Calhoun and goes to find another ford further north--at this time he is not yet surrounded--he goes to ford "D" and is mortally wounded--panic takes over and the rest is history---However, what about my prior post where Custer attempts to reconstruct an old Civil War tactic he used while with Yates (I forget the battles name right now) where he and Yates attacked two fords at once--he used one company to draw all the Rebs to one ford while he crosses the other completely unmolested---both he and Yates did it very successfully once--why not try again!!!

What I don’t get why was Custer talking like he was holding your horses boys there’s enough for all of us. Show Courage and will be sleeping on robes. Than bye I’ll go to ridge and wait for Benteen? Doesn’t sound nothing like GC? No way he wasn’t leading the charge of left wing. Don’t we have a lot of testimony GAC by river. Something about scout with sqaw than rode down farther the river to scout? And than came back. Than it was said he went to his command. yes collapse at cahloun was caused by the crazyhorse move ,

Why? Have you ever read his book? My life on plains? He talks about Indians and how fast they cross rivers. He gave them a lot of respect there and said soldiers are slow etc [ quote author=" shatonska" source="/post/5192/thread" timestamp="1123702908"] I'm starting to get a different picture here---Custer sends Yates to ford "B" only to be repulsed and reunite with Custer on Calhoun--Custer deploys "C, L and I" at Calhoun and goes to find another ford further north--at this time he is not yet surrounded--he goes to ford "D" and is mortally wounded--panic takes over and the rest is history---However, what about my prior post where Custer attempts to reconstruct an old Civil War tactic he used while with Yates (I forget the battles name right now) where he and Yates attacked two fords at once--he used one company to draw all the Rebs to one ford while he crosses the other completely unmolested---both he and Yates did it very successfully once--why not try again!!! that was benteen's task , cherge the village at MTC ford, never came , too slow , plus reno panic to assist[/quote]
