Frank:
I'm not really into photos of Indians, but I happened upon a web site that has many. Google Axel Jacob, unless you alreadsy know of it.

Just guessing -- but does he look a bit as if he could be a relative of Low Dog? There's something about the set of his jaw that's similar ...

Frank- I believe your picture is a scan from a WILD WEST magazine I sent to the Plains Indian Seminar Two a few years ago. At the time I didn't know anything more about it, but thought he looked Sioux. The Beinecke Library now has this on-line and identifies him as "Chief Snake-Pawnee-one of Major North's Pawnee scouts", and photographed by the Jackson Brothers in Omaha, Nebraska, ca. 1868-70. beinecke.library.yale.edu/dl_crosscollex/brbldl/oneITEM.asp?pid=2011416&iid=1051516&srchtype=The man's outfit doesn't look Pawnee. That does look like the Jackson Bros. studio. -Bob

Buffaloman,
yes I've seen this man labelled as one of Norths Pawnee scouts, but have always felt a little uneasy with that description. There is nothing about him that says Pawnee, from his very long hair, okay there are photographs of Pawnee men who have grown their hair out of the roach style, but none have allowed it to get so long as this man, to his moccassins which are definately not Pawnee. As we have seen from other threads on other tribes, you can't be sure of a mans tribe by the clothing he wears, given that so many studios had a collection of clothing and weapons they liked their subjects to dispaly, but that aside, this man just doesn't look like a Pawnee, I thought Ute when I first saw him, and still do. Elizabeth, you say that he has a look of Low Dog, yes he does a little, but speaking as one who lives in hope of coming across a new photograph of Low Dog, I wish he were. Shan

I have to admit, it doesn't scream PAWNEE to me, certainly not in comparison to the other Pawnee photos credited to Jackson, both in the studio and in the field, although there are Pawnee from this period with long hair. See below:

The first man has mistakenly been identified as Crazy Horse. I don't think he is a Pawnee. Looks possibly like Cheyenne or Lakota . . . 2nd man . . . no idea.

No no, I didnt ask who those two are...they are Chah Oh Ta Kee (I dunno english name) and White Eagle, both Pawnees. Those pics were there only to shown the hair length.

Many later photos of Pawnees show them with braided hair.

Charlie emailed this picture to me and asked me to post it for him. His own words: "this image of Sioux Minneconjou LONE BEAR (MATO ISNA'LA), with this text: "Can anyone to add some informations on this chief?"
