For what it's worth, the Japanese Crown Prince visited Canada in 1907: tinyurl.com/2qqogePerhaps there had been previous official visits before? I see from Dawn's link above that the photographer was based in Vancouver. Apparently there was quite a large community of Japanese fishermen on the west coast of Canada by then. Why fishermen might have a samurai sword is a mystery, but at least it offers a Japan-Canada connection ...?! I suppose there's no doubt it is a samurai sword? The grip looks like it, but as we can't see the tip it's a little hard to be sure ... The NWMP wore sabres. It couldn't be one of theirs, I suppose? Scroll down this page: tinyurl.com/3yr5jlfor a photo of James Morrow Walsh of the Mounties wearing a sabre. His certainly looks very different from Dog Child's sword, though.

I would think a samurai sword would not be that uncommon coming through the northwest port of Seattle. When was the pix made...1890? I think it was just another trade item.
Gordie, do you really think those could be Patton's guns? By the way, have you ever sold used cars? Actually I couldn't stop laughing...

I've just returned to this thread having found a picture of Dog Child/Duck Necklace in a book. I had not read most of the postings before today. Until coming upon the picture in the book, I had assumed that the samurai sword had been added to the picture by Frank for a bit of fun! shame on me.
