The water colour of JUH was made in January 1881 by Mrs. Mary P. G. Devereux at the sub-agency of Fort Thomas. Is it the only real painting that exsist of him? Anymore can added some news? Thanks.

Charlie,
I believe this photograph is made by Ben Wittick, who pictured many of the tribes of the Southwest from 1878 until his death in 1903. I haven´t seen this particular photo before and honestly I can not say if it is Juh. Where did you get the information that he is? Was he at San Carlos in the 1880s?
Best wishes
Dietmar

I'm pretty sure he died in 1882 or 83 - fell off his horse, drunk, I think.

After looking through all the Wittick photos I have, it wouldn´t surprise me if he had photographed Juh, because he photographed most of the other Chiricahua leaders at that time like Geronimo, Nana, Naiche, Loco etc. Here is the famous Geronimo photo, with all the bushes he usually had in the background:

Juh stayed on the San Carlos reservation for two years after 1879. That was the time Wittick was active there. On the other hand he was nearly sixty years old when he died in 1883 and I think the man in the above photo looks younger.

Hello, my friends. I have found the (probably) photo of JUH (seated in the middle) here: pages.mikebrackin.com - I'm not sure that is him, but he was in San Carlos in that period (1880-1881) and there was surely some photographer in the Agency at the time. Then, the image resemble too with the water colour of Mrs. Devereux, and also with the phisical descriptions that we know of him. It's only a my hypothesis, but also it may be true!!!

I'm pretty sure he died in 1882 or 83 - fell off his horse, drunk, I think. Died same way as Geronimo or do you mix them up? There are speculations that Juh was also drunk as was Geronimo when he fell of a horse...and they both did fell from a horse, but Juh may had had an heart attack and then drowned to the water he felt on. But well...who knows...

I got this same photo my self and when I got it (don't remember where I got it in the first place anymore though...) it was named: Dentaliawanap ...does that help at all with the identifying? I have placed this guy under the Sans Arc Sioux with that name but I can't be 100% sure about it.... let me know if you ever find out more about this guy.
