**From 'Custer and His Times, Book Four' and an article by Ralph Heinz, 'Bigelow Neal and Dr. Porter' page 228, reporting information told to Neal by Porter, "I [Porter] found that he [Custer] had been shot twice. One a wound high in the shoulder which, unless it became infected, would not be fatal, the other a bullet hole in the temple."
Dr. Porter reported these same wounds in other LBH literature. As he would obviously know an arrow wound from a bullet wound and had no reason to lie, it appears janajoy, that your family's oral history is incorrect on this point, I regret to say.**
Perhaps she is thinking of that other arrow. Could Custer have been shot in the Dick?

Well, that would support janajoy's contention that "he went crazy."

While some of you girls obviously find this idea funny, I do not, and there is no reason what so ever to even think it.
1. Not one single Indian statement ever mentions anyone in buckskins doing a frantic bunny hop around Last Stand Hill.
2. While some on Reno Hill thought they heard volley fire and others did not... there is no doubt in my mind that ALL would have heard and reported hearing Custer if such a thing had happened.
Indeed, the echo of it might well be ringing through those hills to this very day.

1. Well there was Indian testimony that some of the soldiers 'went crazy' and as they didn't know Custer from Martini, he could have been one of them. If he was hit in the fore..er...ground, do you think he got the point? 2. Benteen did make a subtle reference to it when he said 'Custer cocked it up.' Brings tears to your eyes, don't it. H

Maybe we should use the term "nether regions" . . . not quite as painful!

Hunk - "...Brings tears to your eyes, don't it...."
See? This is what happens when you teach your horse to duck as the arrows come 'whizzing' in.
crzhrs- "...Maybe we should use the term "nether regions"..."
I can't pronounce that with my lips pushed out this far.

I should think Mollie Holland would have been very disappointed by such a wound. ;D
To be perfectly fair, Porter said he had been SHOT twice. You can be shot with either an arrow or a bullet, though I think most of us would agree that Porter probably meant a bullet wound, or he would have specified an arrow.

Wasn't that where Col. Teddy charged up, or was he the guy sorta running things in Texas after the Alamo?
Can't remember, Oldtimer's kicking in.

Aw, give him a break. He's fed up with his brother, Last Stand, getting all the publicity. H

In the book " Lakota Moon " written by Gregory F. Michino on page # 31 note # 58 states " Although I have included the Yellow Bird ( or Yellow Swallow or Yellow Tail ) story because it is part of White Cow Bull's narrative, there is much evidence against the child being Custer's, regardless of its popularizingby Mari Sandoz. Meotzi was already seven months pregnant when She met Custer, and the child was born a full - blood Indian. There is conjecture of a second child, but no evidence or documentation has been found. See Barbara Zimmerman, " Mo -nah -se - tah: Fact or Fiction ? " 4th annual Symposium, Custer Battlefield Historical and Battlefield Association ( Hardin, Mt. CBH&MA 1990 ) 1-8

It just goes to show there's even sex in LBH mythology. This tale excites a lot of people but has no proof to support it regardless of what Benteen said. Now I could care less about how many times Custer spawned but do require some kind of proof. Sandoz repeated third rate sources a number of times. Not a very dependable historian I don't think.
