Did anyone realize Custer had a sleigh built for him while stationed in Kansas? I visited the Frontier Museum at fort Leavenworth a few days ago and to my surprise, there sat Custer's sleigh in the museum. It has a data plate attached to the front giving the details of date of construction and builder. It is a full size deal that can hold 4 or 5 people. I think Santa would approve of it.

TopKick I know there is a photo in Swanson that shows Tom Custer, Libbie, and one of the Wadsworth sisters in a sleigh, winter of 1875. Could it be Autie's? Jingle bells, eh?

Nice thought ... But didn't Tom use a sleigh to rescue GAC and Libbie from the train that was stuck in a snowdrift? So maybe he had one of his own. There must have been quite a few around; Keogh had one at Fort Totten, for instance. (The Co. I blacksmith, Henry Bailey, wrote home to his mother proudly telling her that Keogh had paid him $10 for ironing it -- and had promised him and the First Sergeant a ride in it the following day. Sweet.)
Happy Thanksgiving to all.
