Since Diane really wants the "base ball" talk in this section, here's a good place for it. And to help it along, here's the last 3 baseball posts from the Introduce Yourself 2: Electric Boogaloo thread. Uh, excuse me, Mr. crzhrse, but I do believe it was Johnny Damon's lead-off homerun and two runs scored that were the undoing of the Red Sox last night. Let's judge the trade or signing of Damon after the season is over! bubbabod Well . . . it WAS against Wakefield who did give up that game-winning homer to Aaron Boone in the 7th game of the 2003 playoffs between the Sox-Yankees in the famous "Why did Williams leave Pedro in so long" game. Why wait til the end of the season? . . . that's no fun! Okay, let's just see how good you guys are. No looking in the books. Can anyone name the 1927 NY Yankees' starting line-up & the names of their 4 most effective pitchers?

Personally, I can't believe Pena did NOT attempt to score on that Farnsworth WP. Granted, his run didn't really "count," but it woulda opened first for Ortiz and created a bases loaded situation for Ramirez ... a tragedy tonight at Friendly Fenway!

Personally, I can't believe Pena did NOT attempt to score on that Farnsworth WP. Granted, his run didn't really "count," but it woulda opened first for Ortiz and created a bases loaded situation for Ramirez ... a tragedy tonight at Friendly Fenway! I missed it. For some reason, my parents decided going out for dinner for my birthday was better than staying home and watching the Mavs-Suns game, the Yanks v. Sox and the Sabres playoff game. Of course, when my dad found me already at his house, flipping between the Sabres and Sox/Yankees, he gruffly said "put it on baseball. I don't want to watch hockey." Nevermind that it was my birthday, and the Sabres are my hockey team. Oh well, they still won. And the Dodgers are up 7-0 on the Rockies in the 8th. That's gonna be 6, excuse me, its 7 wins in a row. Garciaparra Watch: 2 for 4, 2 runs scored thus far. His average is only .375 as of right now.

Bad base running ...
Don't get me started on Nomar ... I was particularly disturbed when the Cubbies let him go. And it just figures he's doing great at first base, when the Wrigley faithful are desperate for a first baseman--or even a U-man--who can ALSO hit. If anything, Nomar has proven over and over again he is a hitter's hitter, no matter what position he plays. So instead of Garciaparra we have Jacque Jones and a slumping Juan Pierre? The other day, Baker actually had Jones hit clean-up and Pierre hitting second!
I think we still have another 2-3 weeks before we can even think of Lee coming off the DL and showing signs of last year's batting champ. But the Cubbies, I'm afraid, won't be pulling off a Astros-like miracle ...
Happy late birthday, BTW. Leyton McLean

I see by Diane's little note on the main page Babe Ruth hit his last home run today, 1935 . . . 71 years ago!
Now Barry Bonds has tied him . . . but it took him more games and at bats to do so and I think Aaron had more games/at bats when he tied then broke Ruth's record.
Not taking anything away from Aaron/Bonds (maybe Bonds with the extra "juice") Ruth will always be known as the Sultan of Swat and THE home run hitter of major league ball.
I use to get upset when some of my athletic hero's records were broken but came to realize that even though their marks have been surpassed that does not diminish their greatness.
Also we have to consider the time frame of the records being broken. For example if Jim Brown (NFL all time great runner) didn't retire in his prime he would have set records no one would have touched. As it was he established all the marks in far less games and carries than any one else who since have broken those records.
And for all time winners . . . need I say more than Bill Russell, 11 NBA championships in 13 seasons, and EIGHT IN A ROW!!!!! When someone says dynasty . . . then you can talk to me when they have done that!

Breaking news ... the Cubs have traded 2B Jerry Hairston, Jr. for the Rangers' DH Phil Nevin ... despite Nevin's ridiculously low average (he was benched for a rookie), his stats would still TIE the Cubs' in HR (Ramirez) and LEAD in RBIs. The Rangers will continue to pay the majority of his six million dollar salary.
Heard Nevin can play first, third, and catch. Oooh, boy! Looks like the Cub faithful might have gotten nothing for nothing.
Now what was that other bit of baseball news out of Texas ...?

Leyton,
I think the CUBS should have traded for Dr. Phil, NOT Phil Nevin!?!? I think that Dr. Phil would have done BETTER for the club than Nevin...............Oh, Forget it -- There's Nothing that could help the CUBS, except to, maybe, move them to the International Chess Club (TOO much of an intellectual sport, How 'bout Checkers, that's easier)!!! ------ GO WHITE SOX!!!!

That's "the World Champion White Sox," ahem. Speaking of which, Jim, I was forced to watch Hawk Harrelson and that other Southsider guy broadcast the finale of the Cubs-Sox series last week. If I hear "he gone" one more time, I swear I will need Dr. Phil! I think Hendry may be taking Nevin as a carrot; perhaps burnish that mighty batting average at the Friendly Confines and hope someone will trade for him and a prospect in July (supposedly, there is an on-going flirtation with Jeff Conine). Unless Lee is more hurt than management is letting on, not that the Cubs would ever be dishonest (err, Mark Prior) with the press. But come Barrett's suspension, I just cannot imagine a line-up with Pierre, Perez, and Blanco ... for ten days' straight? Arrrggghhh ... tell me when next year is here. LMC

Trish, I haven't seen the report about Nevin being traded to your Cubs. I might point out also that he plays a pretty decent 3b, as well. And he has played a little catcher. He's a very streaky hitter, and when he's on, he can carry a club, for a while. Maybe your Cubs didn't do so badly afterall.

Hawk Harrelson! He used to play for the Red Sox and wear Nehru suits! Quite a character and favorite with the fans . . . I didn't think he was still doing anything regarding baseball.

Oh, he's still doing something in baseball. He's being the worst announcer in the entire league. I like watching baseball games, and I'll watch just about any game if there's nothing better to do. But I can't stomach any White Sox games. They make the Braves announcers sound impartial and competent.

Hey, crzhrse, what's the matte with Nehri suits? ? Oh, wait, it was leisure suits I used to wear. But I'll deny it. They seemed pretty sharp at the time.

Here's a shocker, all ... the Cubs put pitcher Kerry Wood on the DL (15 day) yesterday. He's battling a continuous case of "shoulder soreness." Isn't that the 2,349th time over the past three years? I think it's time for TPTB to seriously consider pushing him into short relief or selling used cars at that lot across from 1060 W. Addison.
I'd say deal, except I'm not sure he has any value.

Too bad for Wood . . . all kinds of talent . . . but a physical wreck . . . his arm and/or body just cannot stand up to the rigors of pitching!
Go BoSox!
PS: It has been raining now since Mother's Day . . . I have not seen much sun and the temps are regularly in the upper 50s . . . a couple days of low 60s!
I'm drenched and so is my garden! Is there such a thing as a Reverse Rain Dance?
