I was wondering if Dennis Fox or Richard Fox posts on here much. I used to live in western Nebraska, and my landlord in the small town I lived was named Larry Johnson. He told me that he used to work for the USGS in the early 1970s and put in a lot of the stone surveying markers around LBH with a young college student who I think he said was Dennis Fox. I wanted to check and see if they were one in the same.

Has to be!
I don't believe either of them post here, but Fred and/or TreasureDude can probably contact them for you.

I sincerely believe that Richard Fox has grasped the essence of what may have occurred in this battle. His investigation and, summation of this battle is awesome. I would love to meet him and thank him for all of his efforts.

Reddirt:
You'd really like both Rich and Dennis. They're both great guys, and Rich throws a mean BBQ.
I did tell Rich that the National Geographic article on the post-fire dig was what hooked me on Little Big Horn, and that his books on the subject evaded me. Being too young to drive at the time, and his books were not available at the library in my town. Then, one day, I weaseled my way into a private trip with Fox, and it hit me: I was going to meet the guy whose work was basically the reason I was into LBH. And I had yet to read his books, when all I had to do was click a few links on the internet to get them.
I was very lucky. My first visit to Little Big Horn was with a great group of guys, and with Fox himself. We followed the trail from Busby to the Little Big Horn, including the Crow's Nest and the Divide. And we were on the off-limits peak of Weir Point when the NPS came to kick us off. Until they saw it was Fox who led the ragtag bunch of trespassers. And we had access to Medicine Tail Ford, from the village side.
All in all, an amazing trip.

El Crab,
Needless to say I envy you. The first time I visited the battlefield my poor husband had to drag me screaming and kicking. While there, I purchased a copy of Richards Archeology, History, and Custer's last battle. His perspective on the battle explains so much that I simple could not understand from reading other books.
How did a Civil War General who performed admirable during the Civil war suddenly become the village idiot on the Little Big Born? Why did the soldiers perform so poorly? Mental debilitation due to combat shock. Why would Crazy Horse travel such a circular route north of the Cheyenne camp to attack Custer from the rear when Medicine trail coulee was available? He didn't he did!
Closed minded individuals who have the circumstances of this battle etched in stone will not agree with Richard.
Before you guys got kicked off Weir's Point what did you see. Do you think it was possible for Capt. Weir to see combat activity on Calhoun Hill from there?
How I wish I could go on a tour with the man who solved so many riddles for me. Three cheers for Richard and Dennis!!!

Three cheers for Richard and Dennis!!! Hey, the first time I went to LBH was either in '91 or '92 to go to a symposium held in Billings. On the tour, Dennis Fox and Joe Marshall were our bus's tour guide. After that, I bought his books. To say he is a sharp guy is an understatement. I do believe that he overstated the tactical disintegration a bit though. Billy

Markland,
Kudos to you too! Wish I could have been there! What about Fox's perspective that Custer moved from Custer Ridge to Cemetery Ridge and back pretty much unhampered. Most of what I've read seem to point to Custer being forced back from Medicine Trail Coulee to Last Stand Hill. El Crab?
