I met The Duke, of course, because I was one of the few guys around the shoot who could play bridge and was a footballer. I never did meet Ben Johnson, who was always my hero, and that is one of the big regrets of my life. Silly isn't it???

My youngest brother played professional tennis and played mixed doubles with John Wayne's wife as his partner. John Wayne had a club in Tustin, California. My Mother and Dad along with my brother got to meet John Wayne. He got a autographed picture for my ex-wife. I never got to meet him or anything. I still hold that against my brother. I told him I only wanted that yellow ivory gripped Colt 45.

PS I got to meet Ben Johnson and posted about it in the movie thread. A real cowboy and gentleman and a highlight in my early career.

As far as this thread. I don't know of any degree of separation yet.
I do have a grandson William Andrews born on June 25th. Since then I found out that there were two William Andrews associated with LBH. One died on June 25th. The other was an officer with Terry's command. Don't know anything about either one.
My grandfather William Begsley served in the 5th cavalry and showed me cartridge cases he found at LBH.

Ranger--
From the ol-l-l-l-d notes:
Co. L, 7th Cavalry: PVT Andrews, William—b. Prussia, 1843. Blue eyes, brown or dark hair, fair complexion; 5’6 1/2” tall. Enlisted 19Dec65 to 19Dec68; enlisted 21May69 & re-upped 21May75. KIA
The other William Andrews was a captain and the C.O. of Co. I, 3rd Cavalry, a part of Crook's column, not Terry's.
Best wishes, Fred.

Steve:
If your grandfather Begsley served in the Fifth at the same time as anyone who served while Wesley Merritt was CO, he would have a link to Custer through Merritt, and so would you.
Ben Johnson was my boyhood hero. My son Clay, whom I've mentioned several times, was going to be named Travis Tyree Harper - until my wife forbade it. Please do not mention having lunch with him again, or I will burn up with envy.

William Armstrong Andrews - he lost the first name Gus

Let me take this opportunity to confess that after my initial flurry over the discovery that my GGrandfather rode with Custer at Gettysburg, it turns out to be unlikely. From rereading one of his letters, I think he was probably detached at the time. Although its inconclusive, his omission of any reference to Gettysburg leads me to believe he wasn't there.......
"In the winter of 1862 and 1863 part of Co D [1st Michigan Cavalry] laid at a place called Drainsville doing picket duty. I was one of the number that was there. ....We had lots of good times and lots of hard times. Standing picket out to the front isn't a very pleasant job, especialy [sic] where some of the pickets are captured or shot every night by gurrillias [sic] that come sneeking [sic] around."
Too bad I can't claim the association, but not being there may have saved his life and allowed ME to exist! So I can't complain. ;D
