Hmmm...seems I am late again! Okay, I am Scott, originally from Baltimore but currently in Los Angeles. I'm as old as Fred was when he first posted. Academically: Johns Hopkins University and subsequently to the School of Medicine but for only about 3 years (it really wasn't for me!). Quantum leap to the present; I have a book coming out in 2014 entitled 'Convenient Heroes' and a second scheduled for later in 2014 "Passing Gas" (it's about Anesthesiology) as well as two more in the revision stage. I'd enjoy writing a screenplay about The Battle of the Rosebud and it's on a 'backburner' (any suggestions and guidance welcomed). My summers were spent on my grandparents' farm outside Gettysburg (hallowed ground I traipsed 3-4x a week before it really became the tourist spot). With my interest in the ACW in the east, I was invited to visit Crow Agency, MT. and discovered LBH; I've been hooked ever since.

I met my wife in Bmore. I would kill for a steak and cheese from Captain Harvey's in Dundalk, and a pizza (one slice anyway) from that little dump pizza joint on the diamond in Emmitsburg. Some Watson's Fried Chicken and Pickled Eggs in Frederick would hit the spot as well. Watson's closed but someone else has their chicken formula, and its worth flying from Colorado to Frederick.
Where did you go to high school? It wasn't Loyola or Gilman was it?

High School was in Bel Air, about 30 minutes NE of B-more; Loyola is in Towson (the county) and Gilman is right on the line. I grew up in Highlandtown - right next to Dundalk. Love Fells Point and Bertha's Mussels. Years ago there was a place in Hagerstown that claimed to have the "Watson's Recipe" but I never tried it. Small world. I went to JHU and ended with a graduate degree in Physiolocial Biochemistry; the decision not to complete med school was, actually, a no-brainer. Gilman is a lacrosse dynamo supplying a lot of Division 1A schools. Captain Harvey's. Now I'm hungry.

I know Highlandtown. My unit bivouacked in Patterson Park back when King got whacked. We had some XVIII Airborne Corps and 82nd Airborne in there with us. Damned big park/ I wonder if they still speak more Greek than English in Highlandtown?
Pick me up on your way from LA and we'll split the check
I grew up back in South East DC before the swells moved in and the house prices went through the roof. Just a couple of blocks from the Navy Yard and the Marine Barracks. Those were the days when you were undressed without your switchblade and if you went to Anacostia you were as good as dead.
I have only been to Fells Point a time or two. 32nd Infantry Brigade loaded out from there for a Reforger. The Bureau sent me over to observe loading on a RO/RO to see if we could computerize load plans at unit level. I think that was the last time I was there.
Fells Point is the epicenter of all Baltimore politics and Baltimore politics are Maryland politics.

English is a 3rd language around the Highlandtown environs. First is Bawlmerese, then Greek with English as the fallback. [Yooze gawn downy oshun, hon? = English equivalent (roughly): Are you and your family going to the ocean?] Yeah, definitely a 3rd language. Fells Point/Little Italy - political axis for whatever happens in Crabtown.

Well a town where Bel Air is pronounced Blair can't be all bad. I think I will go out in the snow and scrub down my marble steps.
Some day let me tell you the story of Angie from Little Italy. Must be by PM though, because this is a perennial family show.

Ah yes, the steps! For those perusing this exchange, the southeastern portion of Baltimore is 'Highlandtown', known for its marble steps; every rowhouse has a set. National Geographic did an article on them. Every week (usually Saturday mornings) you take a pail of hot water, a can of Ajax and a stiff scrub brush and clean your steps. Take your time, QC, it's hard on the knees.
I also forgot to mention Fells Point/Little Italy also contributes to national politics as well. Nancy Peolisi (I will remain neutral on that) is a D'Alesandro from Bawlmer. Her father was Tommy, Sr. two-term mayor of the city and her brother is Tommy, Jr. the mayor when you were ensconced in Patterson Park.
I'm dying for a crabcake...steamed crabs would be too much to ask for.

There is a place just outside the boarding gate at BWI that has the best crab cakes in Baltimore for my money. When I went back for my 50th High School reunion held in Bowie my brother in law picked me up, and before we went to his place in Annapolis we had a crab cake sandwich or three there. Same thing before I left to come home.
People who did not grow up in cities with ethnicity like Bmore don't know what they are missing. I love where I live here, but getting back every so often just to soak it in is a must for me. When I was back for that reunion, my brother in law and I went down to the city docks in Annapolis. USS Annapolis was making a port call, and we visited the Naval Academy museum which had just reopened. The weather was perfect, a sea breeze. You just don't find that in the high desert no matter its other attributes.
Nancy has done some good things and some not so good, but if you want to understand her you have to look no further than Tommy and Tommy Jr. Barbara Mikulski is from Fells Point as well. I escorted her a time or two at various functions where we were smoozing with the pols. She is one tough woman and I sure as hell would not want to be on her wrong side. Hoyer was a couple of years ahead of me in high school. Good guy.
There is a place in Crisfield that will overnight crabs anywhere in the country. I have done it a couple of times. Expensive but worth it.
Forgot to tell you. I once had a civilian secretary whose name was Wanda. She was from Highlandtown, and had never in her life been outside the city any further than Urbana to eat at the Peter Pan. Well traveled lass was Wanda, and she was mid 30's at the time.
Jack's on Lombard Street. How could I forget Jack's Man can not live by steak and cheese alone. He must have corn beef on rye.

Ian: You are not a man unless you can look death straight in the eye with a steak and cheese in your hand, grease dripping from your lips and a smile on your face.

Only place I know where you can get a corned beef on rye about 2 inches thick; along with a dill pickle the size of a mortar round. You were obviously 'south of the border' from me - Bowie. Best crabcakes north of the city was from Angelina's on Harford Road but I don't doubt your experience outside BWI. Did you ever experience The Lexington Market? My son is a firefighter downtown and for picking up food they love The Market. One nice thing about Baltimore...or Maryland...is the history. Fort McHenry, go north to Gettysburg, west to Antietam, everyone should be requred to go to The Vietnam War Memorial and changing of the guard at The Tomb of the Unknowns - you can hear a pin drop. Crisfield - the famous Eastern Shore; wow...one word. You're right on with 'Babs' Mikulski - a very determined, tenacious woman. Her parents had a grocery store (I think) in east Baltimore. And yes, being on her bad side can be deleterious. But she remembers her roots. Oh, Obrycki's in Highlandtown had good crabs and crabcakes, decent crab fritters also and soft crabs. By now we have our smorgasbord: Crabs, Philly Cheesesteaks, Corned Beef Sandwiches. I may fly back after the winter thaw just for the food. Thanks for the memories. Scott

Thanks guys my cholesterol level has risen from 5.4 to 10 just by reading your posts! Take some Lipitor...or Crestor. Then place both hands on a Philly Cheesesteak, ignore the juices running down your arms and dripping from the elbows, take a huge bit, sit back, chew and be thankful for the Lipitor - it's worth the prescription.

Scott: I did not go to high school in Bowie. I went to Suitland still in PG County but there was nothing suitable by way of venue nearby. We have had previous reunions in Annapolis as well. My class was over 650 strong so size of venue still makes a difference for us.
Lexington Market - Once a week for two years.
As far as history goes, I loved poking around Fort Howard and Fort Smallwood. I am really intrigued by those old coast defense forts and there are a zillion of them from NY to Norfolk. Howard was an active post through WWII. I think it was the 12th Infantry that was stationed there prior to WWII until just before the start of the war they moved to North Post Fort Myer. Fort Washington in PG County was active until 1946 and during the war housed the Adjutant General School. Lot of old coast defense emplacement there as well dating from the late 19th Century.
Obrycki's I have heard of but was never these.
PS I just finished the above and turned the site off. The screen saver came up saying that I live in the tenth LEAST obese city in the US. Boulder where DC lives is at either 2 or 3. Considering this conversation I feel obligated to change those statistics radically/ McAllen, Texas is the most obese. It must be all that good Mexican food down on the border. Now Mexican food opens up a whole new avenue of approach, one that is sure to attract Ian's attention, medication recommended notwithstanding.
My mistake Boulder is Number 1 least obese. My apologies DC. It must be all that healthy living promulgated by the commissar there in the Peoples Republic
