Now most of Deadwood has admittedly turned into a bit of a tourist trap but the Adams House and Museum is worth a visit. The Museum is amazing both for the exhibits and the research opportunities. They do have a section that touches on the Custer Expedition of 1874 and indian fighting in the Black Hills. adamsmuseumandhouse.org/

Mary Kopco is the director of the Adams Museum and House. Her husband does a podcast about Deadwood. It covers the HBO show but also a lot of Deadwood history including a sound seeing tour of Mt. Moriah. www.realdeadwoodpodcast.com/

T-dude! I'm pretty sure we met her just a couple weeks ago. We decided to get a lifetime membership in the museum and they all seemed very happy with our donation. They always treated us well when we were there before and we decided it was worth the investment.

I've never met her. I just picked that up from the podcast. What did a lifetime membership set you back? I haven't been to the Adams Museum in a couple years. They have some pretty cool stuff if i remember right. Downstairs was where the oddities used to be.

The lifetime membership is a $500 donation. First and foremost, you get a nice tax write-off. You also get free access to most of their events and a 15% in their giftshop. They have quite a variety of other things but those are the ones we have taken advantage of so far.
We plan to be back in Deadwood again towards the end of October. I have my own ongoing historical research projects there. If you are in the area let Laurie and I know.

I certainly will! I'm sure we'll meet up at one time or another out there.
BTW, I've been reading your blog. Good stuff.

I'm always glad to find another person reading the 'Booming Prairie Chicken'! I haven't had the time to devote to that I would like. Right now I am doing a bit of incidental research on Gatling Guns. If you look at some of the older entries on the blog, or even the photo galleries for that matter, you will see that I'm a bit of an ordnance freak. The only funny thing now is that I'm hunting for a pre-1885 Gatling Gun to photograph. Now on our previous trips to Aberdeen Proving Grounds we always walked right by a nice 1872 model they had right inside the front entrance of the museum building. Now can I find any Gatling Guns during our travels in the West? No such luck!

For the record, Laurie and I formally retired in May of 2015 and moved to Deadwood in November of that year. We live within walking distance of both the Adams Museum, Adam's House and the Homestake Research Center. The historical research opportunities are literally amazing on many aspects of the 'Gold Rush' era. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions. I'll admit it right here and now; we promote our new hometown any way we can.

... we promote our new hometown any way we can. Well, welcome to our little fun-house here: I hope you post and contribute a lot... and I hope you promote the Little Big Horn event, as well. Best wishes, Fred.
