There are numberous Custer sites in NYC and I am quite surprised no one has undertaken to write a pamphlet or Custer guide to NYC! Strange when one considers how many trips GAC took to the great metropolis, even mentioning once how it was his favorite city and he hoped to one day make his home there. Of course, Libby actually did this, so between them, there is no shortage of Custer sites in the Big Apple.
Here are a few of them:
Delmonico's Restaurant: located at 56 Beaver Street in the Wall Street area of NYC. Their website is: www.delmonicosny.com/dels.asp
This of course, was GAC's favorite restaurant and he ate here on a number of occasions. This restaurant was also frequented by Gen. Grant, Abraham Lincoln, Mark Twain, Gen. Fremont, and nearly every Mayor the city ever had since it first opened in 1837. The menu is still pretty close to the original in that they still offer their famous Delmonico steak (a 20 ounce ribeye), venison, Lobster Newburg, Chicken Cordon Bleu, and their baked Alaska for dessert, all of which were recipes first invented and served at Delmonico's. When GAC was in the city, he would have eaten at their 5th Ave. location at 13 St. (on the northeast corner). This is a flower shop now I believe.
The 5th Avenue Hotel: one of the hotels where GAC stayed when he visited NYC. It was located on 5th Avenue at 12 Street. The modern office building there now contains a plaque on its outside wall commemorating the site of the 5th Ave. Hotel.
Caswell-Massey: America's oldest chemist and perfumers est. in 1752. GAC frequented this store when he visited NYC and was said to have purchased his toothbrush here (and no doubt his cinnamon oil for his hair). Their website is: www.caswellmassey.com/ and their shop is located at the corner of Madison Avenue and 48 Street. Although they had a shop in the first floor of the 5th Ave. Hotel when GAC stayed in the city, so he no doubt used that location for his purchases.
