Ft. Wallace, located on the Smoky Hill River, approximately 140 miles west of Ft. Hays, was the western outpost for the troops stationed at Ft. Hays. It was involved in a number of actions in the so-called indian wars. There is a museum in the nearby town of Wallace and the old fort location is about a mile south of the town.

Thanks for the posting smokeyhill. Both Keogh and Barnitz were stationed at Fort Wallace (along with Lt. Frederick Beecher of Beecher's Island fame) along with their respective companies, I and G in 1867. Barnitz and G Co. along with troopers from I engaged the hostiles in sharp action that year not far from the post.

See "the Barnitz Fight" under "Indian Wars." Great article.

I have just returned from my first visit to Fort Wallace. The artifacts in the museum are fabulous! Went out to the old cemetary, what an unhospitalbe place it was. Since there are no reamains of the fort buildings, I was guessing that they were below the hill the cemetary is on. There has been a shelter built for the centopath erected in 1867 for the fallen soldiers.
