Just a quick correction:
Several recent writers, most notably Richard Hardorff and Gregory Michno, have considered the two interviews of Iron Hawk to be of the same individual. However, they are not.
The Iron Hawk interviewed by Judge Ricker in 1907 is the father.
His son, known in the agency records as Homer Iron Hawk, was interviewed with Black Elk by John Neihardt in 1931.
In addition, both writers indicate that Iron Hawk was a Hunkpapa. Unless I missed it, I could not find a mention of this in either interview. Both of these Iron Hawks were actually Oglala, members of He Dog's Soreback band. This Oglala band had close ties to the Hunkpapa, including some marriages. If the elder Iron Hawk was a Hunkpapa, perhaps he married an Oglala that brought him to He Dog's band.

I remember that the Oglala Iron Hawk was a son of Old Smoke, so he was probably not a Hunkpapa, if there is not another individual by that name.

Wasn't Old Smoke killed by one of Red Cloud's clan members which opened deep divisions between his and Crazy Horse's clan?
The deep divisions later resulted in the many rumors being spread by RC and other's of his band toward CH and lead to his death.
Which just proves that even though members of the same tribe (Lakota or other) there were many inter-band/clan feuds that prevented them from forming a unifying force against the whites.

Crzhrs, you are right about the intertribal feud in the Oglala tribe. But it was not Old Smoke who got killed, but Bull Bear, a strong and powerful leader, who was opposed by Smoke. Red Cloud was his nephew or adopted son and it was said that he himself killed Bull Bear in 1841. Old Smoke died many years later. Bull BearĀ“s son Little Wound, who also became an important Oglala chief, was a lifelong enemy of Red Cloud.

One additional detail regarding Homer Iron Hawk. In the list of eye-witness accounts for the Soreback Band (Oglalal Lakota) which is published in the current issue of Greasy Grass, Homer Iron Hawk's year of death was noted as unknown. At the time, all I knew was that he was still living as of 1938, the year of the last available Pine Ridge Reservation census.
Fred Wagner however has since provided the year as 1950, though he could not remember for certain where he found that. With this help, I was finally able to find in the South Dakota state death records that Homer Iron Hawk died July 4, 1950.
Thanks Fred for the heads up!
