Elisabeth--
On our public television network last night, there was an episode of The American Experience about Annie (Butler) Oakley, who went with the Wild West Show to Victoria's Golden Jubilee celebrations. The television show was quite interesting, and I'm certain its airdate was not circumstantial!

I also saw the PBS show last night (actually 2nd airing, seen it twice now)
There was also an interesting segment on Antiques Roadshow (same night) about a woman who found a small Native American "purse" with tin-type photos of Lakota men. The appraiser said it appears the photos were from the late 1870s-1880s and probably included warriors who had fought Custer! I did not recognize any of the warriors, but many were in traditional clothing.
The appraiser also stated that it was a "whole other world" that the indigenous people lived in and the photos of newly "surrendered" warriors got him going.
Appraised at $5,000-$7,000 for 12 photos!

Great links, Elisabeth!
That ship looks so small! It must have been a miserable trip for humans and animals.
crzhrs, I saw those photos also. Interesting, but no familiar faces.

As for the trip to Europe . . . . see BLACK ELK SPEAKS for his experience travelling on the boat . . . apparently many Indians became violently sea sick and I think he even got lost once they landed!

Actually, he didn’t get lost, but missed the boat back to America when the show was over. Black Elk was on his own, eventually finding his way to Paris. A year later Buffalo Bill’s show was back for another tour, this time in France. Black Elk didn’t miss the boat a second time when the show headed back to America.

Crzhrs--
Strange, I couldn't help but think of seasickness when I saw the photo of all of those Indians on the boat over to Europe. I got nauseous just boating on Lake Powell and I thought I was gonna die on the hydrofoil over the British Channel ...
I saw Antiques Roadshow as well ... those tintypes were amazing. Anybody up for a little research?

Leyton:
It would take an expert to figure out who the Indians were in the photos . . . the appraiser is knowledgable regarding Native American artifacts but could not ID them.
It always amazes me what people find in grandma's trunk . . . and that doesn't include anything that doesn't show up on Antiques Roadshow . . . and who knows what gets thrown away!
Still waiting for the holy grail of the LBH to show up and explain to us just what Martini/Benteen/Reno/Curly/WMRH/Thompson/Goldin, etc., were talking about!

For any Buffalo Bill fans, if you haven't had the chance to visit, I highly recommend visiting Lookout Mountain, high up west of Golden, Colorado, and overlooking all of Denver, at least what you can see through the smog, and visit Buffalo Bill's grave, his wife's grave, and his museum. Lots of his outfits, weapons, etc. Well worth the visit. OH, and then you can find your way down the mountain to Golden and take the tour of the Coors Brewery and even taste a few of their brews. Nice way to spend a day.

Elisabeth: thanks for sharing the links about Buffalo Bill. I know that you live in England, but if you ever make it to Cody, Wyoming, please go to the Buffalo Bill Historical Center. It is actually five museums combined in one location. You will find it very interesting (lots of Annie Oakley stuff too) as they have full size displays of the beautiful posters that BB used to stir up enthusiasm for his shows. Some were big enough to fit on the side of a barn and one that size is displayed in the museum. Here is a link that will tell you more: www.bbhc.org/bbm/collections.cfmBubbabod: Love the suggestion of the Coors brews! Best wishes

On this day, 130 years ago, the LBH expedition set off from Fort Lincoln. So Diane, please don't think I'll be offended if you remove the "congratulations" message and reinstate the "today in history" line!
