I am always looking for organization tools, and I discovered one today thanks to Kim Komando ( www.komando.com). Library Thing ( www.librarything.com/) appears to be a great way to catalog books for free (my favorite word). I chose to keep my list private (available in the Profile section) for now, but you can share your list with others. Adding books is easy. For example, put in Boots and Saddles, and a list appears from Amazon that shows various editions of Libbie's book as well as other books containing those words. Simply click on the one you have, and it is added to your list. You can also manually add rare books that aren't available on the Amazon or libraries' lists. The graphical shelf tool available in the Your Catalog section displays images of your book jackets -- pretty cool.

This isn't a collection tool but this seems the best fit for the post. Fred's posts regarding note-taking and my need for some software short of M$ Project or Open Office's version made me go on a Googledition the other day for some type of history note software, preferrably freeware. After sorting through dozens of genealogical packages, I found this application named ScribeProject "designed especially with historians in mind" at The Center for History & New Media. It looks a little complex but I am going to give it a shot to see what happens. The URL is: chnm.gmu.edu/tools/scribe/ Billy

Sounds fabulous, Billy. I've taken the liberty of passing this on to a friend who's currently living in a sea of research notes for a book. Could be just what all of us need!

I'm an old goat, but I feel like a six-year old wandering around w/ a bunch of college profs! Fred, from one old goat to another, you ain't lost it yet bud. Some of us just have more time than money or good sense. Speaking of which, I have started two new side-projects dealing with frontier forts. One is to scan & OCR the Surgeon General's Report of 1870 on Military Posts as reported to him by the post surgeons. An example of how what they consist of is at: freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~familyinformation/Forts/Ft_Sill_SG_1870.pdfThe other one is OCR'g a 1902 Adjutant General's document, "List of Forts, Named Camps, Redoubts, Reserations, General Hospitals, National Cemeteries, etc., Established or Erected in the United States From Its Earliest Settlement to Date." Later, time to get ready to hit Leavenworth and, ugh, proofread. Well, after I get through listening to Sonny Rollins playing "God Bless the Child" . Billy
