While playing around at B & N, I spotted these upcoming titles which may be of interest.
Buffalo Calf Road Woman: The Story of a Warrior of the Little Bighorn Rosemary Agonito, Joseph Agonito
In the Shadow of Wounded Knee: The Untold Final Chapter of the Indian Wars Roger Di Silvestro
Voices of the American West: The Indian Interviews of Eli S. Ricker, 1903-1919, Vol. 1 Eli S. Ricker, Eil S. Ricker, Richard E. Jensen (Editor)
The last looks especially interesting.
Hope this helps someone.
Best of wishes,
Billy

There has been a thread about Buffalo Calf Road Woman on this forum. Have you seen it: NEW VERSION OF CUSTER'S LAST STAND?
The controversy regarding BCRW is that the Northern Cheyenne have now come forward with "new" info regarding the LBH in which Buffalo Calf may have inflicted a fatal blow to Custer. She was one of a handful of woman warriors and is best known for saving her brother at the Rosebud. Now she seems to have been invovled at the LBH also.

Hello Markland, Did you get any dates on those books, I mean are old and possibly out of print. I like the sound of all of them, but I agree about the third one, Shan

The Ricker Interviews have been used by writers and historians since they were done. He interviewed many of the Indians who were participants in many of the engagements with the military.
Marie Sandoz used the interviews for part of CRAZY HORSE and CHEYENNE AUTUMN.

Shan, Jim Donovan just told me he has learned from the U. of Nebraska Press that they will release a second volume, which will consist of Ricker's interviews with soldiers and settlers.
Best of wishes,
Billy

Another new book announced in the latest Upton's mailing, and published by them:
'Red Sabbath: The Battle of the Little Big Horn' by Robert J. Kershaw.
Described as "analyzing the causes of Custer's defeat from the standpoint of a professional soldier". Available in October 2005.

Just got notification that my copy of Voices of the American West: The Indian Interviews of Eli S. Ricker is being shipped today.
I will let you all know how it is. That is assuming I am still alive to read the things...time to scheme out how to get them in the house unseen by she who usually must be obeyed.

First impression of the Ricker Indian Interviews book is that it is a must have. Granted, as the book points out, Ricker wrote many of his interviews in an unknown type of shorthand but all in all, on just the five or six I have read so far, well worth the price.

The Ricker interviews have become one of the greatest sources of info regarding events of Indian-White issues. The interviews have been used by many other authors, including Sandoz, as basis of books.

The interviews have been used by many other authors, including Sandoz, as basis of books. Yep, I know. Utley, Green, Paul and countless others have used those interviews in their books. What is invaluable to us, the layperson, is that we now have them accessible without travelling to Nebraska. Look over on the Red Dog Ledger art thread under Native Americans or whatever for a specific comment about the book. I was impressed enough with the quality and content of the book to pre-order the second in the series, Soldiers & Settlers. Now to cancel that pre-order with B&N and go through FOTLBHB to Amazon. I see that the Ricker Vol I book is 500 pages so it should be loaded with enough info to keep anyone awake all night. And there are pictures too! The price is $55 . . . a little steep but if it's as good as some of the excerpted interviews I've read it must be worth it. I wonder if its available from my local library. I may have go there and see if they have it or try inter-library loan. This book may be one of the most important books regarding the events of the 19th century vis-a-vis Indian-White relations/conflicts. It may shed enough light to answer some of the topics/questions we have discussed here.

It's amazing the number of books that are continually being written/published regarding the period of the mid-to-late 19th century concerning the events of the Indian Wars of the Great Plains and their aftermath. I already have more books than I can count . . . but it's money worth spending if it can make one a more knowledgable person.
