I personally think Robert Utley is a national treasure. Mr. Utley's interest in the Custer/Little Big Horn saga started as a youth and his career began in earnest in 1947 when the very young Utley held his first job at the battlefield. That same year Utley met and became friends with Charles Windolph, the last living soldier from the battle. 'CUSTER and ME' is an excellent read for anyone who is interested in the battle, history of the park and the early workings of the Park Service. We learn of the friction between Indian activists groups and confrontations with Russell 'wife beater' Means. Utley's first year working at the LBH was under the direction of the legendary Edward S. Luce, who was the park's first superintindent. My good friend Ron Pickard suprised me with an autographed copy which is one of the gems of my book collection. A highly recommended book.

I picked up my copy at the LBHA convention in Rapid City. I had Mr. Utley sign my copy as well. I sat and read it in one sitting (something I rarely do). Great book and a fantastic read.

This is a great book. But, there is still more to come from Mr. Utley. He's quickly wrapping up his second and last volume of the Texas Rangers. Utley shared several chapters of this book about the Texas Bandit Wars with me and it's an eye-opener. You can read my review of "Custer and Me" at the Friends of the LBH website -- www.friendslittlebighorn.com/Custer-and-Me.htm -- there you can select to read a portion of Chapter 2 of the book.

Bob Utley also told me, in Rapid City, that he hopes to do a book compaing Billy the Kid and the Australian bushranger Ned Kelly

Chuck finished Custer and Me last night and loved it. Now it's my turn to read it! Rabble, if you see NightShepherd on the boards, he's from Tazmania. I think he wins the award for being the farthest "down under."
